less than 122140 and showing wonderful ability to go any distance and to carry any sort of weight Handsprings second dam was by the successful sire imp Glen Athol a son of Blair Athol winner of the Derby and St Leger and he out of Blink Bonny by Melbourne and she won both the Derby and Oaks and grandson of both Pocahontas and Queen Mary and sire of the Derby and St Leger winner Silvio and the great Prince Charlie prob ¬ ably the fastest horse that ever ran in England Handsprings nest dam is by none other than the great and only Glencoe Going back to Rayon dOr we find him out of a mare by the son of the immor ¬ tal Touchstone the foundation stone of nearly all perfect pedigrees and her second dam was old Poca ¬ hontas herself by imp Glencoe Thus combining several times over the wonderful Gleucoe blood Any breeder stinting a good mare to Handspring has a chance to produce the greatest horse that ever lived and his stud fee is certainly a very low one taking everything into consideration Rainbow considerationRainbow 5OBrown 5O Brown horse 16J hands high foaled 1890 by Longfellow dam Buff and Blue by War Dance Rain ¬ bow won the Brooklyn Derby and many other races in which he defeated the best horses in training and during his threeyearold form worked a mile and a half trial in 236 over the Coney Island track Rainbows dam Buff and Blue is by War Dance one of the best of Lexingtons sons out of the famous old matron Reel by imp Glencoe Buff and Blue also produced Bright Phoebus winner of the Realization Stakes Monita Hardy Sister Geneva dam of Carnero and other winners His second dam Balloon was one of the greatest long distance race mares ever seen in this country and produced the famous brood mare Ballet Rainbow is one of the finest thoroughbred stallions in America and sold for 8200 as a yearling Rainbow made his first season in the stud at Melbourne in 1900 but he was stinted to a few mares before that and from those services he has had seven starters every one of which has been returned a winner including the three high class performers Menace who won eighteen races a greater number than any other threeyearold filly in training in 1901 Wealth a threeyearold filly who in her first and maiden start forced the noted Futurity winner Ogden then an older horse to run a mile underl 40 to beat her a head and Percy F a several times stake small lots rather than banded together in large numbers Mares numbersMares kept in box stalls well bedded down the charges will be 10 per month when running on grass 5 which must be considered a very low price considering the established reputation the Mel ¬ bourne Stud has for the care of its stallions mares and all thoroughbred stock It is a practice at the Melbourne Stud to try the mares three times a week until the first of June and after that time every day until the season closes July 1st which is a guarantee that every mare will be got in foal if care and attention will accomplish this
