GOSSIP OF THE TURF Riley Grannan for several years one of the heaviest plungers on the American turf has under ¬ gone a serious operation at the Roosevelt Hospital New York City to relieve a disabity of long stand ¬ ing It was entirely successful although Grannan did not recover from the shock as readily as was hoped He is now so much improved that his ultimate recovery is assured assuredCapt Capt J H Rees last Friday announced ho had decided to quit the turf for good He will finish out the meeting at New Orleans will be in the stand at Memphis and will keep his promise to look after the details at Louisville but with the end of that meeting he steps down and out for good His interest in racing which has lasted many years has been based almost entirely on sen ¬ timental principles He has received a salary but what money he has been paid has been handed out in expenses and charities He is a wealthy man and has been willing to devote almost his entire time to the work of ridding the turf of the evils which have threatened to wreck it
