GOSSIP OF THE TUBF Mars Cassidy will as usual do the starting at tho coming meetings at Bennings and Aqueduct vrhilo C J Fitzgerald will appear at Memphis before going direct to Morris Park to handle the barrier Cassidy it is understood will use the same barrier that Fitzgerald has used in recent years and in that fway expects to do more satisfactory work As the Jockey Club has made the no recall system a permanent institution it is believed that the jockeys will bo more easily handled and the starters twill have less trouble in consequence The system was regarded as an experiment last season and there was considerable adverse criticism especially by bettors But upon investigating matters tho Jockey Club officials discovered that a majority of owners trainers and jockeys were in favor of mak ¬ ing tho system permanent Starter Cassidy at Aqueduct last fall was compelled to use a barrier that was rather a handicap than a help to the horses Because of its faults Cassidy came in for much unjust criticism At Washington his work will be watched with interest On the opening day of the Ontario Jockey Clubs spring meeting at Woodbine May 23 the oldest race in America will be run under a new name the Queens Plate becoming the Kings Plate and His Majesty King Edward continuing the gift of fifty guineas Queen Victoria instituted as long ago as the year 1860 Though the name is changed a little and there is another donor of the guineas the con ¬ ditions of the race are the same and it has certainly lost none of its attractiveness The foaling season seems to have opened very veryuspiciously uspiciously at Oakwood Farm Lexington Ky Kypwned pwned by C F McMeekin as five fine foals were weredropped dropped at his place last Friday They are as asfollows follows followsChestnnt Chestnnt colt by Woolstorpe Emma Pickwick PickwickBay Bay filly by Ben Brush Clarissa ClarissaBay Bay colt by Handspring Heliopolis HeliopolisChestnut Chestnut colt by Sir Florian Dresden DresdenBay Bay filly by Requital Sultaness In conformity with the ruling made several weeks ago in connection with the Judge Steadman case his owner C Young of Knoxville Tenn has re turned the money won by the horse during the New Orleans meeting which amounted to some 1100 JThe money will be distributed among those which finished back of Judge Steadman in his different differentices ices A failure to make good such a settlement would have meant exile for both the horse and his W H Laudeman has decided to send his good colt Hernando east with J J McCaffortys stable to fill his engagements in the Brooklyn and Subur ¬ ban Handicaps Hernando is considered almost the best fouryearold in the west and last year won among other races tho Latonia Derby Superior Stakes and Grand Stand Racing Handi ¬ cap and he has a mileandahalf record of 233 His weight in both great events is 120 pounds It may be that arrangements will be made for him to remain in tho care of Frank B Van Meter lately engaged by McCafferty as one of his trainers Otherwise he will probably be handled by trainer Peter Wimmer He is not engaged in the Metro ¬ politan Wqrd conies from Louisville that W C Whitneys Futurity winner Ballyhoo Bey has shown such good form in his daily gallops that John E Madden thinks he will be able to take part in the sprint races this year after all If this latest report proves true turfmen will be glad to see the great colt carry Mr Whitneys colors especially in view of tho series of misfortunes that have befallen tho Whit ¬ ney horses this winter winterJames James R Keenes threeyearold colt Telescope has been declared out of the Metropolitan Handi ¬ cap William Lakeland is said to be a part owner of the animal and has been subjecting him to easy training at the Brighton Beach track The with ¬ drawal of Telescope from the Metropolitan does not mean that he will be retired but indicates a plan to keep him for later events W C Whitney will ship twentyfive of his thoroughbreds from tho home farm at Westbury to Sheepshead Bay today With the exception of Endurance by Right and Elkhorn which are con ¬ valescing from a recent attack of influenza all are in perfect health Yankee escaped the disease King Hanover Blue Girl Gold Seeker Goldsmith and Morningside were at one time seriously ill but have recovered The demand for stable room at Bennings is unpre ¬ cedented and it is said that by the time the coming meeting opens there will be no accommodations for the late comers Horsemen who hare been rac ¬ ing at New Orleans have been notified by the Wash ¬ ington health officers that they must be vaccinated or show a certificate that they have been within the past two weeks before they will be permitted to unload their horses at the Bennings track
