GOSSIP OF THE TURF Mr Whitneys Elkhorn and Endurance by Right have been declared out of the Metropolitan Handi ¬ cap chiefly because they have been suffering from influenza at the Westbury farm Elkhorn is still quite seriously afflicted while Endurance byRight is slowly recovering Neither will bo able to stand even light training for some time yet and trainer Rogers says it is best to take no chances especially with the filly Mr Whitneys other horses notably Morningside Goldsmith Blue Girl King Hanorer Gold Seeker and Gunfire will begin light work at Sheepshead Bay very shortly Yankee which won the Futurity last year and later on was beaten by C H Mackays Heno in the Matron Stakes has wintered well and is in rugged health He has developed into a fine racehorse and is expected to carry the Whitney colors to the front in many of the threeyearold specials this season In fact it may be said that just at present Yankee isfhe only horse in the Whitney stable whose condition for future events can be banked on The stewards of the Jockey Club have ordered the erection of starting gates at Morris Park for the preliminary schooling of horses to break from the barrier and will see to it that their orders are im ¬ mediately carried out James H Bradford treas ¬ urer of the Coney Island Jockey Club and its real head although William K Vanderbilt is president has i6snedsimilar orders with reference to Sheeps head Bay and will personally see to it that his com ¬ mands are obeyed Charles F Price at present the efficient secretary and general manager of the California Jockey Clubs meeting at Oakland will occupy the stand as presiding judge at the Latonia Jockey Clubs spring meeting which opens May 26 and closes June 20 This arrangement was made during the past week and the announcement is made on the authority of Assistant Secretary John B Dillon who was instructed accordingly by Judge G Per ¬ kins and Secretary Hopper As to the associate judges no determination has been reached and it is announced that they will be named later How ¬ ever there is a probability that they will be Col L P Tarlton of Frankfort Ky who presided at the meeting last fall and Col Jack Price of Hills boro Ohio J R Keenes threeyearold colt Telescope has been declared out of the Metropolitan Handicap William Lakeland is said to be a part owner of the animal and has been subjecting him to easy train ¬ ing at the Brighton Beach track The withdrawal of Telescope from the Metropolitan does not mean than he will be retired but indicates a plan to keep him for later events eventsAnna Anna Gray recently imported from England by the Messrs Keene died last Friday at Castleton Stud The mare foaled a fine colt by Trenton three days before her death and was regarded as one of the most valuable mares on the farm She was out of the dam of the famous Mannie Gray and sired by Free Knight
