GOSSIP OF THE TURF. A call at the S. S. Brown establishment, Sheps-head Bay, several days ago, found trainer Peter Wimmer busy with his preparations for departure for the south with his string. In the establishment are eight yearlings, besides the two-year-olds, Blue Ribbon, Lady Josephine and others. The stabloa plans, according to trainer Wimmer, are to ship to Louisville, Ky on Tuesday. There he will pick up a number of the stables yearlings and go to Mobile, where he intends to winter. The older horses will be left at Louisville, and none but the yearlings will be taken to Mobile. The youngsters that are suffering from a slight attack of distemper will have the benefit of the mild climate of southern Alabama for the winter, and be eot ready early in the spring. Secretary Hitchcock, of the Interior Department, has given to Liveryman Sinson Cooper, of Hot Springs, Ark., the privilege of using the water from the hot springs in his stable for the cure of debilitated and crippled horses. This is a novel idea in the treatment of horses. A large system of bathing stalls has been fitted up and there the crippled thoroughbreds will receive the same treatment that suffering humanity does, j When Secretary Hitchcock received the petition asking for these privileges he readily saw the advantage of it and immediately granted it. Hereafter there need be no hopelessly broken down horses on western race tracks as long as the health-giving waters of Hot Springs can be used as an elixir to restore energy and health to the unlucky thoroughbred who may have fallen a victim to ill usage or a hard campaign. While at Latonia last week Mr. T. C. McDowell said : "Allan-a-Dale is sound again and will stand training. That is, ho is as sound as ho ever was, being a little dinky from the time ho was a yearling. Ho injured his knee at that time by getting over a fence. There is not a trace of the trouble left that he showed after he won the Derby. His knees are all right, and the last trouble ho had was in his foot, which he injured in some way during ,the race. Ho may stand up for a few races ; of that I am reasonably certain, and may go through the season, of which I have some doubt. My mare Monarka was afflicted with similar trouble, and yet she ran aomo very creditable races last season and then developed tho same old trouble and had to bo retired. Allan-a-Dale may do tho same. Inventor is all right again, and I am sure that he will train. I have twenty yearlings at home, six of which have been very sick, and I guess I will be able to win a selling purse or two next season.
