Beldame raced into the lead at the start, held a good advantage well in hand to the straight, where she finished out the journey under a hard drive, in which she displayed superior gameness. Monsoon followed the winners pace closely throughout and held on in improved style, considering the fast track. Tepee got away very badly and was crowded and pocketed in the first quarter and, compelled to bump her way through on the stretch turn, she tired slightly right at the end, but was easily second best. Wild Thistle finished strongest of all except the winner. Pirouette, on the extreme outside, went wide on the turns and could never get into sharp contention, although she stuck to her work gamely. M. Theo finished close up. Fine Fleur led the rear bunch at the finish and will do better. Scratched— 39416 Rowena, 115; 39988 The Lady Rohesia, 110; 40010 Glad Smiles, 107. Belmont entry, show, out. Roehampton is a sturdy type of a horse this year and will make good in something like his old brilliant form, waited on Fire Eater perilously long and only drew up on even terms in the final sixteenth, after which he came away fast. Fire Eater displayed a tremendous turn of speed for six furlongs, leading by a wide margin hard held, but at the end of seven furlongs he commenced to sulk and was slowing up fast. Bon Mot got away poorly and fell out of it on the backstretch closing up at the end like a cyclone. W. R. Condon held a prominent position throughout, was only downed for third place in the last stride. Flying Buttress went well in capable hands and requires a strong and vigorous rider. Leader got away badly and received an inefficient ride. Tantalus Cup is still far from fit. Roehampton, show, 1 to 2. Fire Eater, show, 3 to 5. Satire, in rare form and particularly fond of the grass course, went right to the front and won all the wav, finished with plenty in reserve and was much the best. Circus was whipped and spurred from end to end and kept at his work with remarkable gameness, putting up- an electrical rush at the windup. Carbuncle developed improved early speed today and held a good position within striking distance of the winner, moving up, when straightened for home he momentarily threatened, but fell away again and Haack was caught napping for second place. Philippine trailed far in the rear until in the stretch, where he made up a lot of ground. Lanceman went well for a mile before he gave it up and was evidently short. * Scratched— 39769 Ethics, 105; 40039 Moroton, 98; 40015 Carroll D., 96. Overweights — Carbuncle, 1 pound; Philippine, "2.
