Orthodox was the best at the weights and should have won easily, but Fuller had him on the outside of his field all the way. He came fast on the stretch turn, easily caught the leaders and won going away. Harangue broke well and forced a fast pace, from which he tired after coming wide into the stretch. Mimosa got through next to the rail and saved ground enough to appear the winner until straightened out, where she tired, but held on in gamer fashion than usual in the final drive. St. Valentine lacked in early speed, but finished going fastest of the field. Garnish was used up in the early racing. The others were outclassed. Foxy Kane ran in a good position all the way, closed up fast in the stretch next to the rail and outgamed Blue and Orange in a hard drive. The latter is speedy and held on well at the end after getting off running. Our Nugget was a sharp contender all the way, but was tiring at the end and Rigodon would -have been third in another stride. The latter received a poor start, but closed a big gap, finished fast and would probably have won with an even break. The Guardsman and Orloff both made up ground. Lady Amelia is a speedy and high-class filly, outbroke her company, showed the most speed throughout and handled her weight well, but was tiring at the end and doing her best. Dolly Spanker ran a good race today in blinkers. Closer up than usual all the way, he closed up gamely in the final furlong, was wearing the winner down and would ha.ve won in another hundred yards. Race King, a consistent colt, was speedy and hung on well at the end. Mineola, off none too well, finished fast. The weight was too much for Grenade. Won driving; second the sam Lady Potentate received the benefit of a vigorous ride and that won for her. She stood a hard drive gamely through the last quarter of a mile and wore down Widows Mite in the last sixteenth. The latter ran in much improved form, showed speed and fought out the finish gallantly. Stonewall saved ground by running next to the rail all the way and finished fast. Medal was running well at the end after racing in the ruck throughout. Demurrer showed the most speed to the stretch and tired. Past ran well for seven furlongs. Buttons was under a pull for the first part of the race and readily went to the front when turning out of the backstretch, saved ground on the stretch turn and won in a romp, failing to run out as usual on the turns. Brigand ran in improved form, aided bv his light weight. Masterman was used up in racing with Buttons and tired on the turn out of the back-stretch, but held on gamely. The pace was seemingly too fast for River Pirate, but he probably sulked for he did not run his best race.
