Ice "Water was shut out on the first turn and came around the field, was slowly gaining at the end and would have been second in another stride. Champlain readily went to the front on the backstretch, but he began to tire near the end and was doing his best at the finish under the whip. Paget ran well and saved ground by hugging the rail throughout, but tired when it came to a hard drive. Sam Craig, off none to well, was taken up too fast in the first part of the race and tired in the stretch. Porn-pano made up ground and closed up fast at the end. Masterman does not seem to be himself and the race was a poor one for him. Mabon did not run to expectations. Overweights Pompano, 1 pound; Longspur, 2; Rathowen, 5. Champlain, show, evens. Conover fenced well and went the course today without mishap and had things all his own way when several horses went down two jumps from the finish. John E. Owens went well and finished gamely. Red Hawk was beaten at the time the accident occurred. Black Death was in a good position and going fast when he fell. Gascar was the first to fall and the others tumbled over him. Meistersinger was lucky to get through next to the rail at the stretch turn and was under a drive all the way home, but held on well and outgamed Highlander in the final furlong. Highlander broke better than usual and worked his way to the front in the stretch, but tired when strongly driven. Paul Clifford was easily best ;at the weights. Practically left at" the post, he closed a big gap and was catching the leaders at the end and would have won with an even start. Demurrer showed the most early speed, but quit. Sweet Tone was going fast at the end. Right and True was interfered with right after the start. Mimon performed poorly. Corrected weights Right and True, 94. Overweights Demurrer, 1 pound.
