IN DEFENSE OF JOCKEY MILLER. New lork. April B. Trainer Io m Welsh, who-will manage Jockey Walter Miller at the local tracks again this season, says the boy lias been too severely criticised lor rough riding. "Aa long as Miller d es his best," said Welsh yesterday, "he should be encouraged. 1 do not say that he has never been guilt] of foul riding, but Io accuse him ot intentionally Hying to injure other jockeys hy rough lactic- i~ extremely unfair. He wants to win every race in which lie has a niounl. and for that reason lie may at limes be a trifle Km. eager. But the boy i- honest and thai means everything. He is lie best rider in short distance races that 1 have ever seen and he can beat any starter in the business in gelling away from the barrier. In races over a distance of ground Miller is not so good, but he will Improve in time, no doubt, as he gains experience."
