; , I , , ; THIRD IN THE LIST OF WINNING SIRES. Mr. Belmonts Hastings, with Some Account of His Career On the Turf. First in the list of American sires in 1002. Hastings was third in Hx 7. A brown horse by Spendthrift — Cinderella, by Tomahawk or Blue Ruin. Hastings was a high-class race horse in bis day and since bis retirement from the track iias been consistently in the first flight of successful stallions. Hastings began his racing career as a two-year-old at Sheepshead Bay June 15. ISft.i. being then the property of Gideon and Daly. His first start was in a purse at a half-mile, which he won easily in 48 seconds from Honolulu. Radnor and ten more youngsters. June 20 he won another purse, this time at five furlongs. Diakka being second and Honolulu third. Six days later h • won the Surf Stakes at live furlongs in 1 :hft£ with Handspring second and Sagamore third, they being his only epponents. His only other start that year was in tin- Futurity, won by Requital. He had become the property of Mr. Belmont and in his colors finishe.l fifth. As a three-year-old he started in but six raci s. of which he won three, was second in two and unnhiced in on.-. His first start was in a purse at Morris Iark May 12. which he won easily from Beldemere. Gotham and two more. Then Handspring beat him by a head for the Withers Stakes, but in succession be won the Tolaiggan Handicap and the Belmont Stakes. In the latter he avenged bis Withers defeat by overcoming Handspring by a head. At She pshead Bay he ran second to bis stable mate Margrave in the Tidal Stakes and could have won. He ran unplaced in the Realization, which Requital won. with Peep oDay second and Merry Prince third. His raciug as a four-year-old in 1897 terminated his career on the turf and he was retired to the Nursery Stud. That year his first start was for the Metropolitan Handicap at Morris Park. He was 10] weight with 124 pounds and ran fourth to Vot r. •» . Tlie Winner. 116 and Casseopia. ft." . His next start was in the Kearney Stakes at Saratoga, for which he ran a sensational dead heat with Clifford. each carrying 122 pounds. At the Sheepsu ad Bay fall meeting he ran unplaced in the Fall Handicap with 132 pounds up. was second to Belniar in the Ocean Handicap and second to Ben Brush in the Omnium Handicap. At Grav, send be won a ytirse from Ornament and Cleophus. ran second to Ben Brush in the First Special and second to Pat Dunnes Flying Dutchman for the Culver Hand trap. At Morris Park he won a purse and the West-chester Handicap, ran s •oond to Sir Walter in an overnight handicap and to Semper Ego in another. This was his last race and Semper Ego had up lft4 pounds to Hastings 120. Glorifier. Tileing and Fair Play were his leading representatives last year in money won and good judges expect the latter to rank high among the three-year-olds of 1908.
