MORE RAIN AND MUD AT WASHINGTON Old Oxford Wins His First Start of the Year i Obdurate Defeats Spencer Wells Washington I C March 31 The heavy rain this morning again put the track in had condition but there were fewer withdrawals than expected The weather conditions this afternoon were the worst of the meeting A fine drizzling rain contin ¬ ued through most of the afternoon and the crowd was confined to the regulars The track was little better than a road of mud hutone horse Oraculum made two journeys through it today todayJames James McLaughlln again started off with a winner when old Oxford won the opening race easily from Simple Honours with Oraculum the favorite in third place The winner is looking better than at any time in his career and wore no bandages today todayJohn John E Madden won the second race with Ob ¬ durate one of the three youngsters which he started In the race Spencer Wells supposedly one of the best of his age at the track did not appear to take to the going as well as did the winner hut ran a game race Taboo another winner of the meeting was in the worst going on the inside throughout and was given a weak ride by Keating KeatingRight Right and True was an easy winner In the third race on the card Wilton Lackaye which finished second also lias a likeness for heavy going and was second best Woodllne tired fast near the end and was lucky to save third place placePoquesslng Poquesslng came backhand won again today but on their present form he did not beat very much Oraculum made his second trip over the heavy course in this race hut did not get much as he finished third Park Row which finished second vas heavily supported by a wise set just before post time and after racing Oraculum into sub ¬ jection had nothing left to withstand the closing rush of the winner winnerThe The withdrawal of Cenarrls in the steeplechase left Alken as the most probable winner and he was supported by talent and public alike and was one of the easiest winners of the afternoon afternoonAl Al H Woods the winner of the closing race is a good horsu now and will likely beat better horses than he met toilay before the meeting closes closesJockey Jockey W Shaw was set down for three days by the stewards for ungentlemanly conduct in the jockeys room and misbehavior at the post on Orac ¬ ulum in the first race
