TROUBLES OF A DISTURBED BREEDER Lexington Ky April 4 Harry Stanhope took Ji part of his horsemen friends to his farm a day or two ago to sec his colt by Watercress out of Marechal Nell Among them was Charley Hughes trainer for Henry M Ziegler the Cincinnati thc ntrical magnate who pronounced the youngster the finest eolt lie lias seen in many a year Tills colt will not be a year old until April 20 and he stands Jiow fourteen and onehalf hands Marocahl Neil wing by Hanover Margerine by Algerine is a full sister to The Commoner and to Rhoda B dam of Richard Crokers English Derby winner Orby and Rhodora counted among the best of the three yearold fillies for racing in England this year Marechal Neil Is also a halfsister to Margerlquc the dam of Nasturtium and Waterhearer This colt has a peculiarity as to color When lie was Toalcd and all through the summer he was a per ¬ fect chestnut but as his winter coat came on he turned apparently n solid black Mr Stanhope con lends that he will shed out to his original chestnut color colorI I am in a quandary about this colt and his dam said Mr Stanhope If the AgriewIIart mil is passed in New York I will not be able to set what the colt is worth in this country and I will not want to continue as a breeder of thor ¬ oughbreds I liave given the matter deep study and the probabilities are that I will send him and his dam to England for sale during the summer I paid Mr Haggln 1000 for the season to Watercress in 1900 and this line colt was the result I wanted to breed the mare to Adam last spring hut a colloquy by mail as to terms delayed the matter Jintil It was too late I was willing 1o pay 1000 for a season to Adam if the owners of the stallion would Insure nn a living foal that would stand up OWr Miller would not meet this proposition exactly He would only agree to give me a return privilege providing the stallion was still in the possession of the owners of the Mlllstream Stud at breeding time in IOCS Consequently Marechal Neil was not J red and she has no foal this year She is to be mated shortly with cither Watercress or Adam I have not made up my mind which but It will be one or the other Every time I look at that year ¬ ling I feel like it will be Watercress but when I Ret to thinking about the English market I have a notion that a foal by the son of Flying Fox might liring me more money abroad When I talk with my friends among the breeders and owners some Bay Watercress and some say Adam So there it Is 1 do not know
