BILEY GRANNAN JOINS THE GREAT MAJORITY Rawhide Nev April 4 Charles Riley Gran ban the wellknown bookmaker died here yesterday afternoon of pneumonia Grannan came here two months ago to regain his broken health and recoup his fortunes In some mining ventures Through ex ¬ posure from the outdoor life he led lie contracted a severe cold which soon developed into pneumonia Hp never sufficiently recovered to be removed to Jleno as the physicians who attended him advised His relatives in Paris Ky have been notified of his death RIloy Grannnn was born at Paris Ky thirty eight years ago his parents being Joseph and Anne Grannan Ills father was a tailor and1 died there Bome ten years ago Grannan left home when seven ¬ teen years old and secured a position as bellboy In the Gibson House at Cincinnati and afterward In the old St Charlep Hotel in Kew Orleans At these hwrtelries be met and became acquainted with the leading turfmen and tlirough some of them obtained 40 jirterwiird employed by b knyikefL tytiy IBI chart maker and learned the Intricacies of book making He then became a Imokmaker on his own account in partnership with Colonel W E Applcgate who is now at Oakland The western tracks soon became too small for his plunging operations anil ha went east with the noted trainer Byron McClelland as his sponsor and adviser His greatest claim to fame in turf annals came with the memorable race between Henry of Navarre and Domino for the Third Special September 15 1S04 Grannan on the ad ¬ vice of McClelland held out Henry of Navarre in his book and laid 3 to 5 against the Kcene horse The race resulted in a dead heat and Graurian was reported to have won 12500 on the race raceGrannan Grannan afterwards went to England but met with poor success there returning to this country and again became a partner in turn with Colonel Applegate George C Bennett and other big layers His fortunes began to wane several years ago and after making an attempt to regain his losses on the coast last fall he went to the gold fields of Nevada where the exposure of camp life caused his death deathGrannan Grannan is survived by his mother three brothers and two sisters
