THE PASSING OF ROSEBEN GREATEST OF ALL MODERN SPRINTERS PLAINLY SHOWS LOSS OF HIS SPEED Red River Wins the Paumonok Handicap for the theSecond Second Time Newcastle Stable TwoYear TwoYearOlds Olds Fail Little Sumter Injured New York April 0 Kosehen tlm great sprinter of tlie last three seasons seems to lie at the end of lils career of racing usefulness At least that was the opinion formed by the majority of those who saw him finish last in the Paumonok Handicap at Jamaica this afternoon It was not an espe ¬ cially brilliant lot of sprinters that opposed him and Uoseben carried only 10 pounds which in former yuars was but a feather to htm but he was not a contender at any time though he broke in front and at the end of six furlongs was ten lengths behind Ked Kiver the winner the time of the race being 1122 And the worst of it was there was not an excuse for the son of Ben Strome except that he could not keep up Although he had worked well enough to bring him the unqualified support of his party on two occasions Hoseben seems to have lost his speed entirely when it comes to racing lie was favorite for the Paumouok and well backed toy the rank and tile who made excuses lor his previous races this season When he broke in front all expected him to step right along and snwtuei lils oppoiioiilsras1 IK was wont to lo In former years with from ten to seventeen more jxnmds than he carried today But lied Uivcr and Hat Masterson passed him in a twinkling Still Hoseben held on well in third place and apparently was being carefully rated His backers gave up hope however when at the end of a half mile he began to drop back and early in the stretch he was passed by the taiienders Shaw easing him up at the end endIt It is hard to account for the decline of Roseben except on the broad proposition that llesh and bone cnnnot wear forever under the heavy imposts that he lias been compelled to take up for the last three years There Is nothing wrong with the horse physi ¬ cally BO far as his trainer can determine and his work and general appearance would indicate his fitness However he may do better when warm weather comes but it was the consensus of opinion today that he will not recover the brilliant form that made him the idol of the racegoing public for throe seasons seasonsRed Red Hiver the winner of the Ianmonok won the ivent last year and virtually Is a better horse than lie was at that time Last year lie carried ninety wight pounds and won in 113J Today his impost was 113 and he won easily in l12g He came In Tor considerable support but the host backed horse nslde from the favorite was Bat Masterson whose odds were chopped from 12 to 1 to 0 to 1 Bat Mastersoti ran well for live furlongs then quit badly Following is the tabulated history l12gThe The luck of the Newcastle Stable struck a snag today when Ceremonins and The Pippin were beaten Jn the twoyearold races The undoing of Cere montiis came first The colt was highly regarded Jiy Ihe railbird fraternity and has been entered and scratched several times This had the effect of making him favorite but the price lengthened and nt the end Katnblc heavily backed was on even terms with him Ramble made a runaway race of It while Ceremonius was an easy second secondIn In the closing race The Pippin n Ben Strome Spindrift filly carried the Newcastle colors She was in the parlance of the track a real pippin and held the position of favorite throughout But being in close quarters early The Pippin had slight chance to show what she could do until too late Melissa at 25 to 1 went to the front early and won in a canter It was the first winner of the season for Philip T Dwyer II P Whitney started a colt that is almost sure to be heard from later on This was Blackford He had worked well but was green and after breaking slowly picked up his opponents gradually to finish second He is sure to do better than this when he knows what is expected of him himDuring During the running of the third race Patriot BtifinWcd throwing Sumter heavily to the ground lie was rendered unconscious and was sent to the Jamaica Hospital In this condition though it was jiot thought that he was badly injured injuredIn In the fifth race Zal ran to the outside fence on the first turn but had the speed to take the lead again in the backstretch and only succumbed to the favorite Bad News in the last few strides Bad News however had speed left and could have svon further off The day was intensely disagreeable as a strong tinrt jvas Mowing from the bay There Is no pro ¬ tection from the wind when from this direction and racegoers had a most uncomfortable time of it itJames James McLaughlln has shipped his slryearoll yray horse Oxford to he raced on the Canadian Circuit He believes that handicappers in the east feave been unduly severe in the weights allotted
