LEXINGTON RACES CALLED OFF FOR A DAY Snow Renders the Track Difficult and Owners Ask For a Postponement Lexington Ky April 30 Turf devotees in this section awoke this morning to be confronted with a threatened blizzard a steady snow falling which quickly cloaked surroundings with slush and ice and added discomfort to the previous bleak and chill weather With slight prosptcts for immedi ¬ ate improvement and a certainty that few would brave the inclement weather to attend the racing the management wisely announced a postponement and declared todays card off offThe The snow and rain put the track in bad condition and it was almost a foregone conclusion that few if any owners would have risked sending their charges to the post in the third and sixth races This would have entailed the necessity of substi ¬ tuting a pair of races had it been feasible to race this afternoon Several owners including Thomas C McDowell and AVoodford Clay were strongly opposed to attempt racing and tlulr inlluence was sufficiently weighty to sway the management Once before was the Kentucky Association forced by inclement weather to declare off its racing This happened in the late nineties during a fall meeting There Is some talk of racing next Mon ¬ day to make amends for having to declare off the sport this afternoon but this is unlikely as it was the original intention to have that day open to enable owners and race followers plenty of time to ship from here without the attending hustle that generally accompanies hasty departures departuresW W J Young will start Dnnvegan and Bill Hcrron in the Kentucky Derby Diinvegan has been work ¬ ing fast trials lint shows little inclination to run In races J Lee will have the mount on either one or the other of flic pair It is generally ex ¬ pected now that George J Long who will positively start Balbus and Sir Cleges will barring mishap land the rich stake Jockey V Powers concluded negotiations this afternoon to ride during the Toronto spring meet ¬ ing for John Powers trainer for Barney Schreiber AVilliam Shields will have second call on the youngster youngsterR R C Kami died late this afternoon He was i insured for 5000
