CENTRE SHOTS DAM A SPEED MARVEL In connection with the return to form and recent show of quality by Rod Walkers filly Centre Shot a Woodlands product it is recalled that her dam Grand Shot was a speed marvel with a brief career on account of an early mishap A F Day ¬ ton a good judge who is now racing in California recently said to Ben Benjamin of the San Francisco Chronicle There is no telling how good a mure rand Shot would have turned out to bo had not her racing career been brought to an early and un ¬ timely end I believe she was the fastest piece of horseflesh the best filly in fact I over saw She made her debut as a twoyearold at the Fair Grounds track at St Louis whore Dick Williams had bur Before she had ti chance to show her real quality though an accident put an end to her use ¬ fulness for racing purposes While being worked with other horses one morning she was jumped on and so badly cut down that she had to be re ¬ tired tiredThe The Walker string of which Centre Shot and Stanley Fay aro the leaders starts cast next week so as to lie ready for northern circuit racing which opens with the Toronto meeting May 23 Stanley Fay is in good condition Walkers lot is well en gaged at Woodbine not excepting the steeplechase fixtures to which both Blacklock and Harry Scott are eligible No matter where the stable may go several of the present string will be turned out until fall Among those are Catherine F Henry O and Old Settlor Catherine F was recently fired for a bid ankle and Henry Is to undergo the same op ¬ eration Old Settler is a bettor horso than he lias shown In California and Walker believes that it will lie policy to give him a chance to freshen up
