SOME EXCITING FINISHES SEVERAL OF THE RACES AT LOUISVILLEWON BY INCHES IN THE FINAL STRIDES Kings Daughter Wins from Great Pirate Through Faulty Riding on tho Latter McAllister McAllisterLands Lands tho Steeplechase fl Louisville Ky May 15 Todays ordinary card was productive of better sport than had been antici ¬ pated several of the finishes being close enough to satisfy the most exacting exactingT T C McDowells Kings Daughter and W J Youngs Great Pirate both starting In the third race at seven furlongs put up a struggle near ttye finish that aroused the spectators to a high pitch of enthusiasm Great Pirate was making his first start of the year and showed great speed in pace making for threequarters and had Ills opponents thoroughly beaten but his rider E Martin became careless near the end and Kings Daughter coming along with a surprising burst of speed nailed him in time to get the decision Great Pirate was clearly best as the race was run and with a more alert marginThe rider would have won by a good margin The steeplechase over the long course the first run at this meeting over the distance was a spirited affair resulting finally in victory for McAllister over Waterway and Class Leader The Corrigai rcresentative put up the besl race of his career He followed the speedy and promising green jumper Don Jolly at a fast gait over the first half dozen obstacles and shaking him off disposed of Moongold and came away from Waterway in the stretch run Moongold would have been a sharp factor at the finish lint for a bad blunder that caused him to fall at the last obstacle Iiller and Ralph Reese also came to grief in the race but none of the riders was seriously injured injuredThe The closing race found Warner Griswell St Val ¬ entine and Beau Brummel heads apart at the end The trio contested the purse in close order through ¬ out and were put to a hard drive in the stretch In addition to winning the steeplechase E Corrl gau gained a purse with his Elizabeth Harwood in the fifth race She had to be much the best oC the band of youngsters that started for the run ¬ ning was replete with crowding which at times threatened to cause half of the field to go down in a heap heapSpion Spion showed a return to good form by takinj the measure of a fair band of sprinters in the sec ¬ ond Estella Cs failure to finish among the placed horses caused considerable adverse comment commentSilverado Silverado broke from the maiden ranks by coming with a rush through the last furlong and wearing Teddy Bear down in the last stride strideDon Don Jolly would have been a much sharper factor in the steeplechase but for having his saddle slip when approaching the last two jumps This caused his rider to take him out of contention The Gerst jumper gives promise of developing into a cracker jack jackFred Fred Fotsythe who returned yesterday from New York maintains that his High Private is the su ¬ perior of Montgomery and Fountainblue He also claims that in Bon Hoiuinc he has a good colt that will be heard from
