ANOTHER RACING BILL FOR LOUISIANA Cordill Measure Is One to Save Winter Racing from Its Enemies Baton Hotige La June 2 The first legislative move to save winter racing at New Orleans was made last night when Senator Cordill introduced a bill in the senate to create a state racing commission to enforce rules governing racing similar to those in Xew York Simultaneously with the introduction of this bill both friends ami opponents of racing gath ¬ ered at an important joint meeting of the executive judiciary committee to present arguments for and against the Ix cke bill which recently was intro ¬ duced in the house and which would abolish the Xcw Orleans races From what can be learned the racing game Is not in grave danger as the bulk of the Xew Orleans people recognize the fact that Xew Orleans must have something to keep itself before the public and exploit Its greatness as a winter resort Pleasure seeking folk are the ones that make winter resorts a possibility and they want to l e amused amusedIt It seems that the antiracing people that is some of them are willing to lot the thing go on but in a new dress and to this the tracks have agreed The reform measures wipe out the book ¬ maker and allow the parlniutuels all minors are barred from the course and no man racing horses can be identified with the management of a race course The racing will l e limited to sixty days each year in any one parish No license from any turf body will be recognized in Louisiana except the one issued by a racing commission created by the new law The tracks will be taxed at five per cent of their gross gate receipts to maintain the commission The race tracks must at the same time take care of all the sick and injured jockeys trainers and owners With these measures in force it can be judged that things will be far different In Crescent City turf affairs In the future futureIt It Is said that the majority of the legislature favors the passage of a bill covering the points men ¬ tioned but that the race tracks will have to lobby the measure through If they fail to make the proper effort the opposition may succeed in getting a bill through that will wipe them out entirely entirelyLimiting Limiting the racing to sixty days lu one parish may not cut the New Orleans game much It will bring new local people into the game however as at least one mile track will be erected In Jeffer ¬ son Parish and sixty days will be used over there Cutting into the gravy of the Fair Grounds and City Park is something that the babies In control there wont relish much but the new track will surely be built if the racing commission bill Is passed Cincinnati Enquirer
