LATONIAS MUTUEL SETTLEMENT TROUBLE Evidently there is need of common sense and a few reasonably accomplished arithmeticians at La touia The difficulty that attended the installation of mutuels of varying value Monday was not only ludicrous hut totally uncalled for The 25 tickets should have been accounted a part of the 5 tickets cue simply rating as five of the others The 2 tickets should not have been installed at all but having been should have been made a separate de ¬ partment apart from the 5 tickets Formerly when mutuels were sold on the New York tracks 25 tickets were sold for the convenience of bettors who might wish to bet in hundreds but they were counted iu the general mass of 5 tickets On the French race tracks mutuel tickets varying in cost from five francs to live hundred francs are sold but the accounts of the different values are kept separate and settled separately separatelyThe The Enquirer account of the difficulty at Latonia is readable and is as follows followsIt It was after the second race was run before the result of the first race was posted As soon as it went up there was a storm of protests Accord Ing to the figures posted the 25 mutuel on Merrick was worth 21375 about 7j to 1 the 5 ticket 1205 or a shade better than 7 to 5 and the 2 tickets 3350 almost nn S to 5 clip clipThe The bettors who had invested in 5 tickets im ¬ mediately began to protest and just why payment was not stopped and the error corrected is not known The only reason is perhaps that the ones in charge were far in the air and let too much get away from them before coming to toIt It was stated that all the money bet was to he pooled and the money divided at the same rate be ¬ tween the tickets of different values valuesThe The race track promised that it would he done and it was done but in such a way that the big fellows got all the best of it getting returns for their money away out of proportion proportionThe The experts decided that the way to apportion the money was to divide the sum bet in thirtytwo parts 2502 were given to the 25 machines 532 to the 5 machines and 232 to the 2 machines That was the reason such ridiculous figures were posted The experts are all right in their way but race track betting is a new thing to them They had figured that the money bet in the machines would be at an even ratio That is the 5 total would be two and a half times greater than the 2 pot and the 25 total five times the 5 But that did not materialize and when the money was cut up the big machines wore given the lions share of it and the little fellows got the worst of it There was so much time lost on the first race and the figuring was so slow that it looked as if it would be dark long before the races could be finished So rather than call any races off the 2 and 25 tickets were offed after the third race and nothing but 5 tickets were sold after that When that announcement was posted on the board all the bettors let out a cheer
