RACING OF THE ORDINARY AT LATONIA LATONIACzar Czar Defeats Pinkola in the Moat Interesting Con ¬ test of the Afternoon Cincinnati O June 19 News that the members of the Kentucky Racing Commission at a meeting held In Lexington today had voted against the pro ¬ posed reinstatement of the bookmakers at Latonia held out more interest here than this afternoons racing The commission while it refused tbe club its sanction to return to the old method of betting gave Its approval to a reduction of purses and gave the Latonia management permission to cut down 100 on each purse or a dally aggregate of 000 Immediately on receipt of the news the manage ¬ ment announced that there would be a meeting of the board of directors to reach a linal conclusion as to the betting bettingTodays Todays ordinary card was Instrumental In caus ¬ ing it big slump In the betting The racing how ¬ ever was keen although marred by much crowd ¬ ing nnd Jostling In three of the races the limit number of starters went to the post The track is barely roomy enough for ten starters and when four ¬ teen attempt to contest the crowding is inevitable especially with the green riders that are in action here Speculators are also chary about Investing their money on any race where starters are too abundant abundantThe The purse race nt one mile in which Pinkola Czar Moquette and SUyo were the only starters resulted In an upset as Pinkola the choice was taken Into camp by Czar after a slovenly ride on the part of Heidel on Pinkola The latter acted badly at ilie barrier and broke slowly Heidel went to tho whip early and rushed the colt into contention in the tlrst quarter traversing a middle quarter In less than 23 seconds lo wear Skyo down It gave him the lead but exhausted him to such an extent that when It came to the decisive racing Czar tnme away from him with apparent ease The steeplechase was taken by Waterway after he had allowed Impertinence to take a long lead in the early running Class Leader beating the heavily supported Mcllvaln for second place The judges were dissatisfied with the weird ride that Kohlcr gave Impertinence and suspended him indefinitely Illler nnd Don Irent both came to grief but their riders escaped injury injuryDick Dick Finnell again showed his inconsistency by falling to finish among the placed ones He was an overwhelming choice for the closing race He raced with Dr Lee Huffman in the lead to the stretch turn and then tired fast Miss Strome taking the purse l y n nose from Water Lake which also showed remarkably improved form over several re ¬ cent efforts nnd paid his place backers handsome dd3 dd3In In addition to winning with Miss Strome L A Cellas Rustle added a purse by winning the fifth race in a tight fit froni George Young recently acquired by J D Grant Crowding was responsible for the poor showing of the choices 15 T Shipp Alsatian Topsy Robinson and Hannibal Bey BeyIn In the races for twoyearolds Fair Messenger and Zeola both scored lucky victories victoriesAnna Anna Day which started in the steeplechase was badly cut about the knee and shoulder a result of her blundering over tho first two jumps jumpsIt It was rumored today that S F Hcaslip has re ¬ signed his position as president of the City Park Jockey Club ClubThe The mutuel calculators again made an error and it cost the club several hundred dollars before the mistake was discovered They calculated the pay on Miss Strome straight at GS95 in the closing race whereas the right pay was 5420
