LIBERTY LEAGUE WANTS GENERAL SANFORD We must not said Mr Hitchcock at Sheeps ¬ head Bay conduct another fight with apologies for racing Racing has nothing for which to apolo ¬ gize There is absolutely nothing vicious about tho kind of betting to which we have been accustomed in this state under the PercyGray law That betting was admirably controlled and it served the useful purpose of stimulating interest in a healthful sport in which many millions of dollars are In ¬ vested and on the continuance of which the well l eing of many thousands of Americans depends dependsWe We must make a fight in every senatorial and assembly district of the state during the coming fall campaign as we should have during the recent legislative fight and elect persons favorable to sports Governor Hughes created an artificial senti ¬ ment In favor of his bills which the friends of racing must offset by vigorous and unremittent toll tollGeneral General Stephen Sanford of Amsterdam who made such an effective fight for the sport in upper New York Is the man to head a Personal Liberty League General Sanford is an accomplished politi ¬ cian his business interests up state are large he is a sportsman of the best reputation his acquaint ¬ ance is enormous arid he is withal a man of re ¬ sourcefulness and energy I hope American horse ¬ men appreciate what General Sanford did for them last winter It is a pity he could not have been all over the state at once Morning Telegraph
