KENTUCKY BREEDERS IN THE DOLDRUMS O H Chcnault of Spendthrift Stud Sets Up a Sam ¬ ple Wail Over Prices Lexington Ky June 26 All the thoroughbred men of Kentucky are in the doldrums Overtoil II Chenaiilt of the Spendthrift Stud says 1 have never known conditions so discouraging is they are today To be ground up in the mill of politics and fanaticism Bailing under tlie name of reform is enough to make a man swear away his prospects for happiness in the great beyond If I could get rid of this bunch of yearlings I conld take it sort of easy with the weanlings for I would have another twelve mouths in which to figure on dis ¬ posing of them To make anything on my invest ¬ ment I have got to average 400 per head for my yearlings It costs me 1GO per head for every year ¬ ling I raise from the time he is weaned until I put him into the sale ring Back of that is the cost of my stallions and marcs and their keep and each yearling represents so much of that in addition to his cost from weaning time I produce all of my provender and I employ no overseers at fancy sala ¬ ries so my yearlings do not stand me as much to raise as do those of many of my friends and neigh ¬ bors I should not be surprised if I were informed that every yearling produced at Castleton costs Mr Kcene more than 1000 The cost per yearling to Mr Haggln will figure nearly as much so at Kings ¬ ton Millstream Nursery Hamburg Place and other such establishments the cost will run over 500 each I sold seven of my yearlings yesterday to a horeo trader for an average of 30 He will take them to the small towns on court days and will probably double his money with them Thev are not good enough for the race track I have some live or sis more that I would sell for an average of 100 100Milton Milton Young said a day or two ago that he would be slad to dispose of every horse on his farm for an average of 100 per head
