New York July 11 The general confidence of the past week in racing circles received a rude Khock at Brighton Beach today Layers and bettors alike had begun to believe themselves safe from police interference therefore the six arrests of the afternoon for alleged violation of the nntlbetting law produced a disheartening effect on almost every one concerned The general feeling of gloom was increased by an accident that befell Robador during the running of the steeplechase which may have a fatal termination for his rider jockey E Heider In falling over the third from the last obstacle llobador turned a complete somersault landing wltli his whole weight right on top of the rider Heider was immediately removed to the Coney Island Emer ¬ gency Hospital where he at last reports had not regained consciousness consciousnessIt It was distinctly unpleasant to Brighton visitors to find a big Increase of uniformed police on their arrival Today there were about twice as many on hand as on any previous day since the meeting opened and this in itself was very discouraging Despite the lowering skies and the predictions of the weather forecaster for certain rain the attend unco was fully up to the 5000 mark The card was ood and with the exception of the unwieldy open ¬ ing and closing races which contained seventeen and twelve starters respectively was made up of averagesized fields of fairclass horses horsesFavorites Favorites just alwut held their own the victories of Bagman Frizette and Paprika being profitable to the public Upton the promising apprentice jockey enjoyed the unaccustomed honor of riding two win ¬ ners Black Mary and Frizette in one afternoon The chief attraction the fourth race at a mile anl a sixteenth was captured by Tony Bonero in spread eagle style Tlic heavily backed fouryearold simply played with Xienap Antaeus Disobedient and Um ¬ brella opposition in name only and ran the distance in I4i5j The fractional time in this race was re ¬ markably fast With Earl G out of her way Fri ¬ zette had only an exercise gallop to beat those pHlpd1 against her In the third race The 2 to 5 pioted against the Wernberg lilly seemed an unus ¬ ually lucrative price priceA A torrential downpour of rain occurred shortly after the finish of the last race which was run in n windstorm Thousands of racegoers were delayed on journeySix their homeward journey Six arrests two of minor Importance in the field and four in the main inclosure fcr alleged violation of the antibetting law were made during the afternoon Tlic wellknown Metro ¬ politan Turf Association before the running of the steeplechase the fifth race on the program John Coyle one of Vendigs outside men was taken Into custody only n few minutes before Because of the prominence of the men involved more cxcitj ment and apprehension among layers and racegoers was shown than at any time since the present anti racing crusade was Inaugurated It had the effect of causing a majority of the operators to retire from business businessA A good source of information ascribes the motivas behind todays raid of which everybody at the track was forewarned early to the desire of the Kings County grand jury to obtain evidence as to how the registration of wagers is being done It Is stated as a fact that some half dozen bookmakers have been tinder surveillance and their methods noted for the Luckily but one of the Intended victims and his clerk were doing business The same authority af ¬ firms that Elder has had twelve Langan private de ¬ tective agency men on the job every day since the horse Beardall be refused at Brighton Beach The license of trainer A Carter is also suspended and bis case has been referred to the stewards of the Jockey Club for further action Beardall ran in the first race today but no particu ¬ lars were furnished In his case It is thought that the report of Dr Saylor the official veterinary sur ¬ geon on the Jockey Club tracks as to the condi ¬ tion of the horse while in the paddock both before and after the race was responsible for the foregoing severe ruling of the local stewards stewardsThe The steeplechase on the program for next Thurs ¬ day has
