COSMOPOLITAN RACING IN ENGLAND The Exeter Stakes at Newmarket July 2 was re ¬ duced to a triangular battle in which England took only a subsidiary part Mr William C Cooper an Australian was represented by Perola which was ridden by the American jockey Malier Mr J P Alzola a Mexican owner ran Dissolute ridden by his Mexican jockey Touterolo and the colors of Sir Richard Waldie Grillith a Scotsman were car ¬ ried by Caught ridden by the Australian light ¬ weight P Vootton who comes to this country by way of South Africa All that poor old England can claim is that she produced the horses Odds of 100 to 9 were laid on Perola and after a by no means smooth display she won by four lengths With Lesbia in the July Cup it was again a case of laying odds on Malierf mount The filly had to give forty pounds to the twoyearold Sir Wolfus and it proved a hard task but site did it The ver ¬ dict was a short head There were six runners in this race and the only English jockey riding was Halsey The only two Englishborn jockeys to win races during the afternoon were Randall on Colonial in a twoyearold selling plate and Trigg on Sella in another selling plate Madden who won the Princess of Wales Stakes was born at Hoppegarten in Germany and Saxby who won the threeyearold handicap at Sccunderabad in India
