f EDWIN GUM WINS THE SEATTLE FEATURE Seattle Wash August 5 William Walkers good horse Edwin Gum further qualified for the remain ¬ ing longdistance stakes of the local racing season by winning the overnight handicap that was the feature of todays card at The Meadows in easy fashion in spite of a poor ride that A Harris Walk ¬ ers apprentice gave him Edwin Gum was heavily backed as an oddson choice on the strength of his good showing of a few days ago It was fortunate for his backers that he was by far the best horse In the race for Harris attempted to squeeze through an impossible opening on the backstretch with the result that his mount was pocketed then sharply shut off and knocked several lengths behind his opponents To make matters worse Edwin Gum was carried almost to the outer rail on the last turn but he was good enough to triumph in spite of it all and actually won eased up with Pedro his nearest opponent driving to the limit Blondy limitBlondy and Instant also scored as favorites The latter carrying the colors of S C Ulldreth won like a good youngster The three races in which favorites were beaten went to shortpriced con ¬ tenders and the racing was formful throughout the day Chalk Roberts arrived today from New York
