PASSING OF A GREAT RACER AND SIRE SIREAn An Illinoisbred thoroughbred of great fame is reported to have died recently This is the brown horeo Aloha a grand racer in his day and sire of the American Derby winner Robert Waddell Aloha Was bred by J P Smallwood near Carlinvillc 111 Snmllwood was the owner of the Imported horse St Mnngo which was a sou of St Albans brought to this country by the American Horse Exchange in 1SS1 From his union with the Virgil mare Ollie also owned by Suialhvood Aloha Avas foaled In 18S5 Subsequently Ollie became the property of AV II Cheppu of tho Meadowthorpe Stud near Lexington Ivy but produced nothing afterward comparable with Aloha Mr Suialhvood raced Aloha so successfully over Chicago and St Louis tracks that John 1 Mclauerty bought him for 20001 In rlS92 and Smallwood retired to his farm with a competence McCafterty achieved many notnblt triumphs with Aloha over the New York tracks as well as thoso of tho west After his re ¬ tirement from the track Aloha became the prop ertyofPa Bradley and at his stud farm at WIlcox Landing on the James River Virginia sired many serviceable race horses but nothing else as good as Robert Waddell which in his prime was really fi jemafkubleJltUe nice llSMiVi
