FALL RACING FOR KENTUCKY TRACKS LexinRton and Louisville in tine Latonias Atti ¬ tude Is As Yet Covered Up Lexington Ky August 22 The information about a meeting at Latonia this fall is not reliable There will be about fortynine days of racing in Kentucky this coming fall Lexington will open Saturday September 19 and close Saturday September 20 seven days The meeting at Louisville which is lo be conducted this season at Douglas Park will follow immediately after Lexington opening either on September 2S or 29 If the rule in vogue last spring is followed the meeting will open on the latter date which is Tuesday The State Racing Commission fixed the opening dates at Louisville and Latonia last spring on Tuesday because it gave the horsemen more time for shipping and did not compel anyone to move on Sunday The understand ¬ ing is that Louisville will want seventeen or eighteen days and it can be said with assurance that the State Racing Commission will grant that number So it appears that there will be racing at the Falls City frour September 29 to October 17 17Local Local members of the State Racing Commission have heard nothing from the proprietors of the La ¬ tonia track with reference to dates but rumor lias it that Latonia will want four weeks immedi ¬ ately following Louisville but that they will want them only with the understanding that they can re ¬ instate tlie iKwkmakers There is scarcely room for belief that the commission will permit bookmaking Then rumor has it the Latonia proprietors will go into the courts to find out whether the State Racing Commission has a right to gay what form of betting shall be employed In other words the con ¬ stitutionality of the law creating the State Racing Commission will be tested Some lawyers are of the opinion that the law is not constitutional but the State Racing Commission has the opinions of some of the best practitioners in the state that it is constitutional At constitutionalAt Lexington the betting will be by parimutnel machines exclusively There will be no auction pools It is maintained by those who observed the betting closely at Louisville and Latonia last spring that the auctions operated in conjunction with the nintiiel machines handieapj ed the latter The amount of money handled in the auctions was usually less than twenty per cent of the amount l et daily through the machines jet comparatively few persons thought of buying parinintuel tickets until they had tirst ascertained how the market stood in the auctions In other words for several minutes of the brief time between races the auction booth was encircled by a throng of nonbuyers who were seeking a line on the favorites Then followed a rush to wager at post lime with the result that the volume of money wagered was not as large pos ¬ sibly as it would have been with only one form of batting and so the revenue of the proprietors was curtailed curtailedTliiTw TliiTw is hero a controversy over the decision of the directors of the Kentucky Association to put on lioth 5 and S2 machines and it may come to I pass that the State Racing Commission will oppose the operation of tlie machines for the lesser amount The advocates of the 2 machines hold that it gives cvcrylxKly a chance to make a wager where the 5 machines woul 1 cut a lot of people out for they maintain it is not everyone who can afford to wager as much as 5 to a race Then too they say that It will increase the revenue to the track and this track has got to trim the corners closely to survive There is no big money to be made out of the owner ¬ ship of a race track here The oldtimers will not hell to swell the gate receipts receiptsThose Those who are opposed lo the operation of the 2 machines contend that they cheapen the sport and really d not bring any more revenue to the asso assoA A call for a meeting of the State Racing Commis ¬ sion to act upon the applications for fall dates and such other matters as may ijomc properly before it Kns not been made as yet
