MEXICAN RACING AND BETTING OF FUTURE Sidney Allen Smith of Lexington Ky said to be there from Mexico as the representative of wealthy Mexicans is laying before Kentucky thor ¬ oughbred turfmen plans that he says will open a great racing plant In Mexico He says the only reason tlK Mexican government has not already made a deal with the New York syndicate Is be ¬ cause they want to introduce bookmaking or rather to conduct the betting on any lines they choose whereas the Mexican government does not want the bookmaker but will permit the pariinu tuel machine which is popular there Smith says the government is ready to grant a concession giv ¬ ing the promoters the right of operating a track free from taxation for a term of twenty years for racing at any season excepting iu the months of Juno and July and will permit any kind of betting except through the bookmakers Representatives bookmakersRepresentatives of eastern turfmen had been ne ¬ gotiating for the concessions lint the betting propo ¬ sition caused a hitch Smith says great race meet ¬ ings could be held making large profits near the City of Mexico and that this would eventually open a good market for thoroughbred yearlings He says many wealthy Mexicans are now giving com ¬ missions for the purchase of thoroughbred yearlings in the States to be entered the lirst of the year in the Mexican Derby to be run first in 1010
