ST LOUIS PROJECTED RACE MEETING Steps Taken Assure Its Being Held and Its Success Depends Upon Horsemen St Louis Mo September 4 The proposed meet ¬ ing here is rapidly taking shape It is now reason ¬ ably certain that ithe Fair Grounds will remain intact for some time and a lease on reasonable terms iwill bo easy to secure secureAt At an informal conference held today Joseph A Murphy was instructed to proceed with his arrange ¬ ments There will be a days racing Labor Day and Mr Murphy will preside A meeting for or ¬ ganization will be held during tlie races The fol ¬ lowing call was issued today A todayA meeting of toll days is projected at the old Fair Grounds in this city We will proceed in the matter only after we have received assurances from the horsemen that a sufficient munlier of highclass horses will be shipped here to insure the St Louis public a spectacle worthy its patronage The St Lcuis public In years past has done a great deal for the owners of thoroughbreds and I know vou will feel that It is your duty to do what you can to help out Kindly let me know as soon as possible wnat I can expect from you in the way of entries The purses will not be large but thev will be promptly met J J Holtmau has donated his ser vices as starter and I have donated my services as judge and manager It is now up to you to do your part My olliee address is 1023 Chestnut street Speaking streetSpeaking of the proposed meeting Air Murphy said Since my return I have had hundreds of the better class of horsemen professional and newspaper men tell me that a meeting such as I project is prac ¬ tically unobjectionable I propose to organize a company to be known as the Missouri Racing and Amusement Company AVith a complete stock of 1OW divided into 150 shares of 100 each we will have a permanent organization Twentyfive of the shares are already subscribed Barney Srhreibcr heads the list with five I think that the Stoek will lie easily placed among the business men of the city and state The first meeting will no doubt be operated at a small loss but we will I am sure eventually put the proposition on a pay ¬ ing basis AVe can increase the capital stock as we begin to expand expandAir Air Alurphy yesterday sent to Attorney General Hadley itselfA the following letter which explains itself A number of business associates and friends here In the city have asked me to take charge of a tenday race meeting which has been projected for this fall fallThis This is in no sense a professional affair and is given by men who believe that a short meeting spring and fall would lie a benefit lather than a detriment to the city To show that we have no selfish motive in the matter every official includ ¬ ing myself will donate his Services free and while the meeting is doomed to financial loss there are people hero ready and willing to make up the deficit by subscription subscriptionAly Aly object In writing to you is to ask you to clearly define what our rights are under the act of 1907 We do this with no idea of attempting to evade in any manner the provisions of tlie act but simply that we might conduct our business so that we will not in any manner conic in conflict with the authorities AVe ask you to show us the line and we will hew strictly to it and see that everybody does the same Jos A Alurphy
