NEW OFFICIAL AT SHEEPSHEAD BAY Xew York January 5 E C Smith has been ap pointed racing secretary of the Coney Island Jockey Club to Jill the vacancy caused by the death of Thomas Smith After tin death of Secretary Smith last fall tin duties of racing secretary were carried on by V E Schaumbiirg but his numerous other duties made it impossible for him to till the office permanently With the opening of a new season the racing secretary is a particularly busy official and Mr Smith took his new desk just at the time of the clotting of tin entries for the Suburban Handicap as wll as the various other stakes of the coming spring meeting meetingE E C Smith is a native of Kentucky and his first association with racing was in Chicago where ha was associated with W W Lylcs in the publication if a form book lie came to New York several years go and up to a few seasons back has been con ¬ tinuously a turf writer and editor editorMr Mr Smith abandoned active newspaper work to accept tin racing secretaryship of the Los Angeles Racing Association when Santa Anita Iark opened With the passing of racing in Los Angeles Mr Smith ranie back east and during the past season he has been associated in an official way with several iif the hunt club and amateur race meetings that are conducted under the sanction and jurisdiction of th National Steeplechase and Hunt Association Both as a turf writer and as a racing otlictal Mr Smith made himself jKipuIar and he has shown that lie is particularly well qualified for the duties he has assumed
