QUICK RESPONSE AT TAMPA ABOLITION OF SYNDICATE RING Expectation Prevails that Raising of Purses Will WillCome Come Shortly Selling Platers Furnish FurnishStirring Stirring Contests Tampa Fla January 5 In spite of threatening weather todays attendance showed an increase over that of yesterday and the betting was much brisker There was one addition to the ranks of the ring Clinton Colby joining the laying forces Several bookmakers arrived during the day and some of them may be on the firing line tomorrow Three of the races furnished close finishes and served to arouse keen enthusiasm In the fifth race Flori Uiley Bannock Bob and Edwin L figured in a thrill ¬ ing contest for the entire length of the stretch and only the judges were in a position to determine tins winner Their award of first money to Flora Riley met with favor Flora Riley was one of three fa ¬ vorites that were successful during the afternoon Milton B and Colonel Ashnieade being the other first choices to lead home their respective fields The principal surprise of the afternoon came in the closing race when Judge Dundon the extreme out ¬ sider came away to a cantering victory over W I Iliuch and the vastly improved Necha The latter was the medium of an attempted betting coup and was probably best but the inexperienced T Koerner was not equal to the occasion The victory of Hali ¬ fax a firsttime starter here Was also attended with considerable profit to the books as Sorrel Top which finished second was probably the bestbacked starter of the afternoon Halifax was lucky to land the purse as he fell lame a sixteenth from the finish and was shortening his stride alarmingly at the end Fred King and A A Stanton were among the layers who got in today and will probably oper ¬ ate tomorrow It is expected that if the improvement continues that was manifested today the purses will be raised beginning MondayAn next Monday An offer of 11000 has been made for Boca Grande by eastern parties He is being given light exerciso and promises to develop into a grand racer i C D Chenault took another double today yfith Milton B and Flora Riley
