40000 FOE FITZ HERBERT S C HILDRETH SELLS HIS CHAMPION RACER FOR LARGE SUM OF MONEY Colts Engagements for 1910 Transferred to Frank FrankM M Taylor but Real Purchaser Remains Remainsin in the Background New York February 1 Fitz Herbert the tlirec vearold champion of 1909 was today sold by S C Hildretli for 40000 and his engagements were transferred to Frank M Taylor Hildreths brother Inluw It could not lc definitely ascertained today just who Is liehind Mr Taylor In the purchase but it is considered almost certain that Charles Kohler wiio recently Ixmjrht Uncle from Mr Hildreth is in the deal Mr Taylor has been engaged to handle some horses for Mr Kohler and though no verifica ¬ tion of the purchase could be had from Mr Kohler liimself it is known that since the purchase of Uncle he has been negotiating for other horses horsesIJv IJv the terms of the sale Mr Hildreth receives 35000 in cash and will get in addition 5000 out of the lirft winnings of the colt Fitz Herlxrt is a fouryearold son of Ethelbert and Siorganatic and was bred by Perry Belmont He first appeared at the races in the colors of A J Joyner who is at present training the horses of Harry Payne Whitney in England Early in bis juvenile year he was sold by Jovner to Herman Brandt for 3500 and shortly after the sale Joyner tried ineffectually to buy him back at a material increase over that price but Brandt would not sell Later in the year he was sold at a good price to Hildreth Fitz Herbert showed under the Brandt colors that he was a good one but lie never really came to himself until a threeyearold wliin he swept all before him in the Hildreth colors The sale is by long odds one of the most important thoroughbred deals in a long time timeThe The jirlce represents the largest sum of money paid for a thoroughbred in America since Paul J llainey purchased le Mnnd In 1900 for 45000 Fitz llerbert cost Hildreth OO and won for him last your iu stakes and purses 34757
