LATOMA CHANGES HANDS CAPTAIN C A TILLES ACQUIRES NINETY PER CENT OF STOCK OF KENTUCKY TRACK First Hove Is to Increase Value of Stakes for Coming ComingSpring Spring Meeting1 with Idea of Improving ImprovingQuality Quality of the Sport Cincinnati O February 14 Captain C A Tillcs of St Ixiuis iiow owns IH IHT cent of the stock of the Latonia race track having closed a deal Satur ¬ day by which he purchased the stock held by L A t lla George 15 Cox J 1 Kespcss and Joseph Uhinock at about par value John Ilacluneistcr who will ba the tlnauclal representative of the new management is here and announces that there will be meetings at Latonia the coining spring and fall with the pariinutiiel form of betting The spring meeting will nin for thirty days at the close of the Lexington and Louisville meetings meetingsGeorge George 15 Cox Rome Respess and Joseph Rhinock liecaiue interested in Latonia live years ago in the spring of JI5 when they bought half the stock t wncd at that time by the CellaAdlerTilles syn ¬ dicate of St Louis They have been operating tlie track for five years but the recent decision for ¬ bidding hookmaking at the track was disliked by them and the Cincinnati men therefore closed out their holdings holdingsThe The only Cincinnati remaining as a stockholder of any importance is Harvey Myers counsel for the company Single shares are held by a number of citizens but no block of any size is now in the possession of Cincinnati men Mr Myers expects to remain as counsel at the request of the new owner C A Tilles lie has been offered a proposi ¬ tion for his stock but will probably decide to re ¬ tain it Mr Tillcs is convinced that the parimutuel method of speculation will prove satisfactory to the public when local racegoers become accustomed to it Every effort will be made to bring the best class of horses racing in the west to Latonia this spring and the new system will be given every opportunity to make gxxl with the public publicHarvey Harvey Myers made this statement Mr Tillcs is now tin principal owner of the Latonia race track holding fully X per cent of the stock Messrs Cox Uespcss and Khinock are out absolutely having disposed of all their shares without exception I still retain my comparatively small holding and shall probably continue to do so though 1 may aeept a imposition made to me by Mr Tillcs It is prac ¬ tically certain that I will continue us counsel for the track as in the past In addition to buying out the Cincinnati stockholders Mr Tilles purchased Jilso the stock owned by Mr Cclla I understand that this part of the deal was in the nature of a trade Mr Tilles taking Cellas stock in Latonia in exchange for some stock in another concern in St Louis I do net know what private agreement there may be between Mr Tilles and his associates but the stock book of the company shows that per cent of the stock is now held bv Mr Tilles alone aloneCaptain Captain Tilles seemed well pleased with the deal To a friend he said We are going to try and make racing pay at Latonia It is an historic plant in a beautiful spot near one of the best cities in the fill ted States If the Cincinnati business men ip preciate what a short race meeting does for the town they will do what they can to help us put the track on a paying basis Until the sport picks up we shall l e glad to get an even break on our investment investmentJohn John Hachmeister will IK in full charge of the racing the coming season and will have his say in the matter of selecting ollieials It is settled that John Dillon who was recently elected to a political position in Kentou County will not again serve as secretary secretaryIn In order to make the stake events to be run at the Latonia spring meeting more attractive the1 val ¬ ues of all will Jte increased Tills announcement was made today by Mr Tilles The Derby which lias been the feature race of the Latonia spring meet ing for many years will be increased from 2iOO to 4000 All the other stakes except the Oaks and Decoration Day Handicap will be increased in value from 100O to lr00 The Decoration Day Han ¬ dicap will IK replaced by the Independence Handi ¬ cap to be run July 4 It will lie worth 2000 The Oaks will be abandoned Entries to the stakes will close March 17
