SALVIDERE IS DESTROYED i Great Gelding Breaks Down Irretrievably in Propara tion for Racing Through the Field New York February 10 Salvidere the greatest twoyearold of 1000 and the winner of the Brighton Cup in 1007 is dead lie broke down so badly while being recently schooled for steeplechasing that his owner Thomas Hitchcock Jr ordered him shot He will be burled at his owners farm at Wcstbury alongside Good and Plenty a jumper which carried the Hitchcock colors valiantly a few year ago agoSavidere Savidere was a chestnut gelding by Belvldere SalJie of Navarre foaled In 1001 When during his first two years of racing he won 1354 it was hoped that lie might win enough in succeeding years to make him the greatest moneywinning gelding in history Such a distinction lie did not earn however for the reason that he did not thereafter train satisfactorily He started only once as a fouryear old and because at that age lie developed a sour and sulky disposition Mr Hitchcock attempted the ex ¬ periment of converting him into a juniper He was reported to have schooled well lint never went to the post in a jumping race As a twoyearold Mr Hitchcock was offered 23000 for Salvidere bv James B Brady but refused to sell for less than 40000 Salvidere stands fifth in the list of the worlds moneywinning geldings Banquet being the leader with winnings of 11853 while Raceland Strath uicatlt and Epsom Lad arc the other geldings whose winnings exceeded those of Salvidere The record of Salvidere is as follows followsSalvidere Salvidere ch g 1904 by Belvidere Sallie of ofNavarre Navarre Year Age Sts 1st 2d 3d Unp Won Won100i 100i 2 7 C 1 0 I 51085 1907 3 10 3 2 4 1 402C9 1008 4 4 0 1 1 2 3rO 3rOTotals Totals 3 21
