AMATEUR SPORT TO OPEN APRIL 16 New York February 19 Amateur racing will begin under the jurisdiction of the National Steeple ¬ chase and Hunt Association and the Hunts Commit ¬ tee April 1C when a oneday meeting will be con ¬ ducted at the old Linden track at Elizabeth N J This meeting is purely a sporting affair no cash purses being offered All the prizes are handsome cups and it is an invitation meeting that always brings together the best of the amateur riders as well as some of the best hunters both from Long Island and New Jersey while some have come from a greater distance distanceThus Thus far dates liave been allotted for a dozen diays of amateur racing with the longest meeting of any one club extending over only three days Other applications are awaiting action by the gov ¬ erning body and Secretary Frank Bryan of the Hunts Committee is confident there will be at least fifty days of such sport during 1910 1910This This is a very decided change from the amateur racing of past seasons and speaks well for tho in ¬ terest the amateurs are taking in it This year the amateur end of racing has been systematized In a manner that has brought about renewed interest and the list of hunt clubs that have secured recognition is greater than ever before In all there are now fortyfour different limits that are regularly regis ¬ tered and recognized and the number is being added to at almost every meeting of either the Hunts Committee or the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association AssociationWitli Witli the awakened interest in amateur rac ¬ ing several of the gentleman riders who have been out of the saddle for several seasons are taking out licenses and other sjwrtsmen are securing good hunters that will take part in tho various meetings Harry W tfiuUb master of the Loudoun Hunt ot Leeslmrg VufThas announced his intention to re ¬ turn to the saddle and report has it that Howard Levis wiho handled the horses of J E Widener in France last season will also take out a license to ride To date twenty gentlemen have taken out licences to ride and this list will undoubtedly be doubled before the real opening of the racing sea ¬ son
