LOUISVILLE STABLES FILLING RAPIDLY Substantial Evidence of Approach of Kentucky Rac ¬ ing Season Waldos HalfBrother an Arrival ArrivalLouisville Louisville Ky March 4 That tho racing season In Kentucky Is rapidly approaching was brought to mind yesterday by the arrival of many horses at Churchill Downs and Douglas Park Most of them came from Juarez Jacksonville and Tampa where j they have been racing during the winter and more will arrive with each passing day until the Ken ¬ tucky meeting opens opensThe The big racing string of the Covington turfman J B Respess with Frank Respess brother of the owner of IMck Welles in charge arrived yesterday There were nineteen horses in the bunch They occupy their old barn on the southern side of the Churchill Downs track The long stable is closed in on the northern exposure and was the winter home of the Respess horses last season seasonAll All the stars of the Respess stable are in this ship ¬ ment the big bunch being headed by the two noted fouryearolds WIntergreen and Turlcy the former of which was the Kentucky Derby winner of 1500 Wintergrcen lias spread out and improved much since he quit racing in the east last season and is expected this spring to return to the splendid form which marked his running here last May when he was good enough to earn a victory in the Derby Respess DerbyRespess will point WIntergreen especially lor the Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs and the Inde ¬ pendence Handicap at Latonia and he does not hesi ¬ tate to say that he expects him to make a good showing in those two important events Turley is a grandlooking fouryearold and some good judges hold him in higher regard than they do the 10 Kentucky companionFrank Derby winner his stable companion Frank Resyess says Turley has always been a hardluck colt and that if he ever breaks his hoo ¬ doo lie will win frequently Respess has some useful threeyearolds in his string but nothing this season of Derby class His twoyearolds however arc promising and several stakewinning prospects arc in the collection The Respess string will be housed at the local track until the windim of the coming spring meeting of the New Louisville Jockey Club next June JuneThe The string of J R Waimvright in charge of Fred Luzader has also arrived from Juarez Dr Waldo Briggs John E McMillan and Posing are among the dozen members of this big stable which also em ¬ braces a bunch of promising twoyearolds the bulk of which are yet to race All the horses In the Wainwright string will remain here to the end of the Louisville spring meeting meetingCaptain Captain J T Williams has engaged stall room at Douglas Park for eisht horses and the veteran turf ¬ man will move his string here tomorrow from his farm hi Wood ford County near Spring Station His son and chief trainer Wink Williams will have the stable in charge having returned to Kentucky from Florida where he had been racing some horsey the past winter Most of the horses Captain Will ¬ iams is sending to Douglas Park are ftwoyearolds and the star of the collection is a halfbrother to the Kentucky Derby favorite Waldo by JHarry Her ¬ mann Captain Williams does not train his young ¬ sters as yearlings severely hut last fall he worked this colt sutliciently to know lie was a good racing prospect and it would take a stiff price to get Waldos halfbrother from the man who has saddled such great horses as Vera Cruz Checkmate Joe Cotton Phil Finch and Rams Horn Captain Willr iams has about recovered from his late severe attack of illness but is still weak In early winter in a canvass lie then made for prison commissioner he exposed himself himselfAfter After all he said yesterday when I went over the situation carefully I concluded 1 was get ¬ ting too old to meddle any more in politics and so drew out of the race 1 found out if I minded my own business properly and looked to my own inter ¬ ests as I should 1 had about all I could do Horses farm and the turf are my specialties while politics and public life are not in my line I am going to trv and win another Kentucky Derby with Waldos halfbrother That would be as much honor to me as being governor of this great state stateJoin Join Marklein has arrived at Churchill Downs from Juarez Mex with the string of horses lie owns in partnership with his father J J Markleiu the ex marketniaster of Cincinnati and The Royal Prince Ijidy Esther W A Leach Beau Brunimel and other nicmlicrs of the stable are now quartered here The Marklein stable will remain here to the end of the coming spring meeting and It Is no secret that the linn is hot after the twoyearold stake events to be decided here It has umlor cover it is said even a better twoyearold than The Royal Prince though the latter was one of the cracks at Juarez It is surmised that the youngster is a colt by Star Shoot out of Birch Broom The latter is a mare bred raised and raced by J R Keene She is a daughter of Ben Brush the sire of Delhi Broom ¬ stick and Sweep and is out of the Englishbred daughter of Dutch Skater Maid of Dorset This colt is Birch Brooms first foul John Marklein is training the colt In partnership with his breeder bookmaker Charles Bowman who owns Birch Broom Both she and Dixolelta the dam of The Royal Priuce will foal to Dick Welles this seasou
