J B RESPESS LOSES GOOD BROODMARE Louisville Ky March 8 J B Respess sustained n serious loss recently in the death of tlie good raci mare and stud matron Charm by Faustus Minnie Payne When George O Bennett sold out his Tennessee Ridgeway Stud at Lexington in November 1907 Barney iSclireiber chartered an automobile in this city to drive to Lexington to buy Charm The Missouri turfmans train from the far west arrived here that morning too late to make connections for the blue grass eapital and to reach there in timo for the sale he had to motor He got to Lexington that afternoon about 230 oclock but the mare had passed under the liammer and Mr Respess got her at a bargain as other buyers did not believe sho was in foal Schrciber that night offered Mr Res ¬ pess 500 profit on the mare and increased the ten ¬ der to 1000 before he left Lexington but tlie owner of Dick Welles turned down the offers Ho told Mr Selireiber that he might just as well talk about a 5000 profit that the mare was off the mar ¬ ket and he was pleased to know he owned a stud matron so highly regarded by the breeder of Jack Atkin AtkinThe The two turfmen finally compromised the case by Respess tendering a gift season to Dick Welles anil the Missouri breeder returned tlie compliment by pre ¬ senting SainCliarm the Kentuckian with a season to Sain Cliarm raced as a three four and fiveyearold and won a total of sixteen races Her foals were Cadet winner as a two and fouryearold Kings Charm winner as a three and fouryearold Lucky Charm winner for four seasons and the highclass stake winners Terali and Ethon She leaves a two yearold chestnut colt now in trainvmr at Churchill Downs in the Respess stable that is a brother to Ethon
