iMarch 21 Evenly balanced fields furnished stirring racing at Moncrief Park this afternoon Tlie public however failed to pick the winners with any great degree of success only two favorites being successful The winning choices ore Dont and Edwin L The Chelsea Stables Mar ¬ tinez heat a good baud of threeyearold sprinters in tho fourth race He came from behind in the stretch and finishing with a rush got up in the last sixteenth to heat Milton B by a length Duke of Ormonde the picture horse was heavily backed In this raw but proved a dismal failure He was never a factor and jockey Burns who rode him claimed that he persisted in trying to bear out The two yearold race went to Dont which made a runaway affair of it and won easily easilyThe The following horsemen arrived from Tampa this the best threeyearolds he has ever trained Love Tie is another good one in the Livingston string C R Patterson arrived from Tampa this morning with a dozen horses while Wayne Joplin brought Parkview JacksonvilleSo So confident is trainer John Powers that Nealon will be as great a racer this year as he was in his prime that ho has advised Barney Schreibcr that tho son of Sain be extensively engaged during the coin ¬ ing season in the east On his advice the horse has been nominated for the Excelsior Metropolitan Merchants and Citizens Champlain Belmont Sar ¬ atoga Empire City and other handicaps In speak ¬ ing of the horse a few days back Powers said Nealon was never a sprinter He was always noted as a slow beginner This spring the old fellow seems rejuvenated as it were He leaves the bar ¬ rier like a quarter horse and appears to take delight in racing away from his opposition in the early stages It is for this reason that I said the other day that I thought Nealon was a better horse this spring than at any time in his career Air Schreiber will have a useful pair of racers in Jack Atkln and Nealon and Sager should not be overlooked for no one knows how good a colt he may be beAfter After a strenuous session here Tom Shaw has packed his grip and has returned to his home in New Orleans where he will remain until the opening of the metropolitan racing season Shaw was a heavy loser up to the time that he quit booking He was more fortunate in operating from the ground and the victories of the Schreiber horses Nealon and Sager enabled him to recoup Shaw operates on a much more conservative basis than he did a few seasons back There is some talk that he may be ¬ come interested in the effort to revive racing In Louisiana He is probably tho most popular sporting man in New Orleans just now and It is a known fact that several of the big merchants have asked him to cooperate with them In purchasing the for ¬ eign interests in the Fair Grounds and City Park tracks
