TOPLAND DOES IMPRESSIVE WORK WORKProcess Process of Preparing Kentucky Derby Candidates Proceeding Pleasingly at Churchill Downs Louisville Ky March 0 Nearly all the Kentucky Derby candidates did work at Churchill Downs yes ¬ terday C C Van Meters Topland took a sudden jump into popularity for the big race hy going an impressive mile in 144 and pulling np a mile and an eighth in liK I Austin rated the son of Or ¬ lando all the way He ran the first eighth in 12ji the quarter in 2rJ threeeighths in IWJ the half in 12 liveeighths in 1 threequarters in 117 and lijjTrainer seveneighths in lijj Trainer Van Meter also worked The Fad a mile and an eighth in two minutes hut he did not finish with the ease that marked Toplands performance owing to being so rank in tiie early nart of the trial that jockey Austin could not properly rate him He went the first eighth in 12B the quarter in 24s the threeeighths in s the half in 4 i the liveeighths in It025 threequarters in 11 eveneighths in 1 and the mile in 140 140The The Derby favorite Waldo was out and worked in easy half in This time lie seemed to run kindly exhibiting none of the sourness he showed upon the occasion of a mile workout last week The great colt however in the opinion of some of the trainers still goes as if he might be a little sore though trainer Colston seems unconcerned about his way of going and expresses himself as hhhly pleased with Waldos training to date It is likely the colored horseman knows more about the colt than any of his critics as he has had him under his care since he was a yearling Trainer liass let Fighting Bob move through the stretch at a twentylive second clip as Sunday he had worked the colt a mih in 147 This colt seems to im nrove right along and he will have many admirers Derby day if nothing occurs to cause horsemen to change their opinion of him himTrainer Trainer Walter Hopkins let Alf V Oldliams colt Charles F Grainger canter twice around the track at a slow gait as Sunday he had let the son of Meltonian go his first mile at anything like a stiff clip sending him the distance in 14 a good per ¬ formance for a first attempt Hopkins is working this Derby candidate with a goodlooking threeyear old filly by Shorthose ShorthoseOther Other good work yesterday was a mile in 14 by W F Schultes Gliding Belle King Olympian went a half in seconds The more horsemen see of this colt the better they like him He runs in his work like a colt that has a dazzling turn of speed and will when thoroughly fit stay as well wellThird Third Rail was the only one of the older brigade to work He looks exceptionally good and Carroll Reid has entered him along with Ben Trovato in the Merchants Stakes at Latonla and also in some of the Saratoga events Some of the other stables at Churchill Downs that inade Saratoga entries yes ¬ terday were J B Respess F A Forsythe and C C Van Meter Mr Reids program this year will be du ¬ plicated by other western racing establishments The trainer of The Picket will nice the meeting out here then go to Latonia and when the Kenton County track winds up its meeting lie will ship to Saratoga SaratogaMjller Mjller Henderson with jockeys M ilcGee and it Williams has arrived from Jacksonville with the string of ten horses he had been racing at that place In the shipment were Skyo Outpost Frank G Hogan Henderson Dont Captain Crawford J II Reed and Placide The latter is eligible to the Kentucky Oaks while Frank G Hogan is engaged with the stables crack colt Captain Morris in the Derbv Henderson was also among the nominations in the big race but did not qualify on March 1 Tho string met with poor racing luck in Florida Their arrival with the horses previously here in chargo of trainer Louis Tauber gives Henderson Hogan a total of thirty horses in training at the local track Jockeys MeGee and Williams will reniuin here during the next month to do the chief riding of the stnbles horses in their fast workouts and trials Thev will both ride at Lexington this spring and Miller Hen ¬ derson will take a division of the stable there to race at the coining meeting of the Kentucky Asso ¬ ciation
