The trial was ovi r a track nearly as fast as on a regular race day. but stiff breeze, blowing up the backstrelch. was a little against the rait, Karly hi the morning trainer 1 Raleigh Colston cantered Waldo slowly once around tin- inside track. Then he put him away to awail the arrival from Ixxiiigton of C. L. Harrison, and jockey Vincent Powers. Ipoii their arrival Waldo and his work companion. Durante, came upon the track with their regular exercise lx.vs up. With Durante in the lead Irainer Colston let Waldo gallop a mile, and then brought them back and walked them fifteen minutes in Iron I of the judges stand. When the horses hail l-eeii properly ai oiu Powers mounted Waldo and. with Donate, went up to the six.eentb post and started 1 he trial, the fracti.mals of which were as follows: ISj, 24J. M|, 4S3. 1:01:. 1:14?,. 1 :2Sr j mile. 1:42: mile and one-eighth. 1 :." »». and the mile and a quar ter. 2:11, Donate pulled up at the three quarters po-i .ind the Derby favorite came tin- last half un-p.-iced. Irainer Colston seenic.l satisfied with tlic colts |H-rfoi-maiice. as he only worked at bis best for a mile. Powers slowing him down the last quarter and especially the filial eighth. The colt seemed bit tared, but assay trainers who witnessed the trial thought this was due alone to a shortness in work, and that with another fast mile ami a •Barter Waldo would 1m- about keyed up. Owner liar rison was pleased witli Waldos performance and express, d himself as delighted with Waldos appear ance. This work of Waldo strengthens his status as the Detky favorite. At this time he is quot.il as .". to 2 ehamv. Fighting Bob is :; to 1: Donau. to 1. and Toplaml and Belluf are quoted at S to 1. The other probable starters range from 10 to M to 1. Powers seemed to like the colt, but intimated that Waldo needed a pacemaker in order to get from Mas his best effort. Powers formed this opinion, he said, from the fact that after Durante Balled up at the three-quarters |M st Waldo slackened perceptibly in his stride. The work of other than Derby candidates at the Downs vostcrday was rather of a slow order, with the exception of the twoyear-old Pit-a-Pit. a Debu- tante Stakes candidate, from the stable of 0. C. Van Meter. She worked a half in ."ol,. Winter-green. winner of the MM Kentucky Derby, weal a half in 51, and the speedy sprinter, T. M. Ureea, went t lie same distance in similar time. Th •• latter ouhi easilv have worked the distance in 4il or l et-ter. Waldo came sleety out of bis Derby route trial of 2:11 on Sunday and today, when cantetcd around the inside track, showed no signs of soreness and looked the perfect picture of good health ami condition. Trainer Colston will give the great colt a short work of four or five furlongs proliahly tomorrow and will set him down again Wednesday to about his Basil over the full Derby course. Trainers believe that the son of Ilanud.s will then dearly establish his right to the position of post favorite in the big race, as they look for him to work a most sensational trial.
