LATONIA CROWD SURPRISES PATRONAGE REMARKABLY GOOD CONSIDERING CHARACTER OF CARD. T. X. Oreen Wins Handicap in Which Coup Attempted on Friend Harry Is Spoiled by an Incompetent Rider. * Cincinnati. O., June 17.— A handicap in which some of the fast sprinters met was the redeeming feature of todays card. The other races were made up of cheap selling platers. The unwieldv character and poor quality of the fields promised little in the way of good entertainment and it was gratifying and surprising to the management that one of th-i best crowds of the week should be in attendance. The opinion prevailed that had the offering been more conducive to big play the wagering would hava reached almost record proportions. Edward Alvev and his connections are said to have planned a coup with Friend Harry in the feature race, but it was spoiled principally bv the colts fractious acting at the |Mist and the iheoin in-tent handling he received from Kaiser, who had the mount. The rigid rule here regarding the consistent riding or the same jockeys left no alternative to the stable but to rid- Kaiser, but the colt was considered good enough to land, even with Kaiser as his pilot. When the break came jockey •Hid horse were unprepared, and the horse was practically left. T. M. Green was off advantageously and made every post a winning one. Jack Parker getting second place after shaking off Emperor William. Friend Harry closed with a rush and with an equal send-off would have won. Considering Emperor Williams long retirement his showing this aftenmon was excellent. Xeil Enrights Orena. which had not won a race in a long time, was successful iu the third race, incidentally profiting her owner handsomely. Hughes was tlie favorite of the race, but frequent interference brought about his defeat. Star Actor, beaten by May McBride iu the second, was unluckv to lose. He was knocked back it the start, then chwed an immense gap. Americaneer. one of the lukewarm choices to score, spreadeagled his opposition in the opening dash. Oinicroit furnished a big surprise by outstaying an odds-on favorite. Alice Baird. in a "sharp last furlong drive. Stone Street showed a flash of good form when he won the closing race from the suddenly improved Colconda. T. C. McDowell stated todav that he would probably ship his horses to Xew York on Sunday next. Barney Schreiber was aiming todays visitors, having come from his Woodlands Farm near St. Louis. He s|ioke discouragingly of the racing situation in this country and intimated that unless there is a speedy improvement he would try and dispose of his extensive breeding establishment. He thinks lie might find a market for Sain in France and that he may send some of his choice mares to Buenos Ayres. General Manager John Ilachmeister has arranged with numerous railroads entering Cincinnati for a reduced rate from nearby cities to afford thoroughbred lovers an opportunitv to yvitness the racng at Latonia July- 4. The cheap rate will lie put into effect July 2 and be good to return on July .-,. Jockey T. K— Mill will leave tomorrow " for New lork. where he will ride as a free lance. Seven races have been carded for decision tomorrow. It is the first time since the installation of the mutuel form of betting in Kentucky that any track has offered more than the regulation six races. G. W. Carinacks string of horses arrived from Montreal today and will be raced here during the remainder of the meeting.
