ZEUS WINS FOR HILDRETH COLT ACQUIRED AT NEWCASTLE STABLE SALE SCORES FOR HIS NEW OWNER. Odds Are Long and Mr. Hildreth Is Reported to Have Had Wager on Iron Mask, Which Finished Third — Fast Time Recorded. Saratoga. X. V.. August 24. — At the recent sale of horses of the Newcastle Stable S. C. Hildreth paid ,500 for the two-year-old eolt. Zeus, and today, when be started him for the tirst time, he was returned winner of the Adirondack Handicap, worth ,500. It would have beca a tirst -class business transaction had it not been that Mr. Hildreth did not consider his colt good enough to take the measure of James It. Keenes Iron Mask, on which he is credited with having wagered ,000. while he permit ted his recent purchase tt run unbacked, with plenty of 12 to 1 and 15 to 1 available against his chances. The track was at its best and while clouds threatened all forenoon there was no rain and grandstand and lawns were crowded. It was a day when fast time was the order. Zeus ran three-quarters in 1:111 to win the feature. This equaled the track record, made by Besom last season. In addition to the Adirondack Handicap there was a mile handicap that brought abo_t another meeting between Sir John Johnson and D.moscara. the two that finished tirst and second in the running of the Merchants and Citizens Handicap. It was won by Sir John Johnson all the way, and his performance was a remarkable one when he took up 129 ixuiimIs and ran the distanee in 1:38. A disqualification arose from the last raee when Rye Straw was home a head before Gold of Ophir. the favorite. Mc-Taggart. who .rode Bold of Ophir. charged that Rye Straw, ridden by McCahey. had crowded his mount in the stretch. The interference did not appear to be in any degree serious, but th" claim was allowed nnd the favorite was placed first. In all of the races la which Iron Mask has been hah tell excuse baa been made tor him on the ground that the going was not to his liking and that the track must Ik- fast for him to show to greatest ad-•antage. Today he found a lighning fast track and on liis showing lie does not -atu|yy[tohave iiiuih ehanee for the Futurity, a ra ce ■■■•Jtnirh he lias been pointing. Before the races there was a sale of horses from the stable of James R. Keene, but Iron Mask was one that was not sold, on account of his Futurity engagement. W. G. Yanke added Round the World to the Adirondack field before post 1inie and her presenee played an important part in the defeat of tin- Keene eolt. She outbroke Iron Mask and he was unable to go along with her in the early stages. He has been breaking away and opening up a Jug toad himself in most of his races, but today he could never go to the front. Round the World set the pace until well into the stretch, but when she began to shorten her stride a furlong from the finish, Zeus dastied through on tlie rail ami won with something to spare. Iron Mask was doing Ids best to save third money at the finish. He was always first choice in the betting, tint there was a good demand for Band the World, while Zeus was practically friendless in the market. Zeus is eligible for the Futurity and his race today makes li 1 in loom as an able aid to Novelty, the Hildreth dependence for that running. Sir John Johnson was at his licst today and his race in the mile handicap was a re|ietition of his Merchants ami Citizens victory. He went to the front at the rise of the barrier and, disposing of the other contenders as they went to him in relays, he had plenty left at the finish to beat homo the lightly weighted Superstition and Banoscara. Thomas Hitchcock. .Ir.s three-year-old Stoure was winner of the stecpleehase f Hie afternoon, but he bad to race all the way to take the measure of Aunt Jule. from which he received twenty pounds by the scale. Aunt Jule. only a four-year-old. was un «ler H|0 pounds, twenty pounds above the scale, and when she finished a close second to the three-year old she had raced under a heavier weight than prob-ablv was ever before carried through the field by a filly of her age. Jn the rnnning of the third race -jockey MeTag-gart. who weighed in five pounds over weight, came back six pounds over and he was called before the, stewards before he was permitted to pass th" s. ales. The extra weight was allowed and Uiandore. the horse he rode into third place, was verified in that position. I S. F. Randolph will ship five horses to Montreal at the close of the present meeting. R. F. Carman will take a stable of twenty to the Canadian track. W. G. Yanke. owner of Round the World and other good ones, will ship his string to Lexington.
