HELMET HAS A CLOSE CALL FAVORITE IN HANDICAP AT LEXINGTON NARROWLY ESCAPES DEFEAT. Leamence Is Beaten Only a Neck After Being Forced Into Worst Going — Movement of Horsemen to Louisville Begins. Lexington, Ky., September 28. — Delightful weather, a good track and a fairly attractive card, the feature of which was a handicap for three-year-olds and upward, at one mile and twenty yards, brought out a good crowd to the Kentucky Association course this afternoon, it being next to the last day of the fall meeting. Trainer .May decided that it would be asking too much of Mary Davis ami lie withdrew her from the handicap, leaving Helmet, Leamence. Royal Report and Tom Bigbee to start. It seemed so much of a foregone conclusion that Helmet would defeat the other three that he went to the iKist an odds-on favorite. LahoM, the only contender, was at no stage equal to the pace set by the daughter of Broomstick. Tippy, an unnoticed daughter of Blues from Cal Milams barn, dropped out of the clouds, as it were, and won the fourth race by six lengths from the favorite. Explicit, after having led all the way. .Miami, the favorite, wore Sigo down in the stretch ami won the fifth race handily from John E. McMillan, which came with a rush at the end. Miami was piloted by A. Thomas, making two wins and two seconds out of five mounts during th" afternoon. The closing race resulted in a betting upset.
