HELEN BARBEE FLEET FILLY JUVENILE FROM ANDERSON STABLE WINS THE GOLDEN ROD SELLING STAKES Racing at Churchill Downs Replete with Surprises SurprisesChief Chief Among Which Is Victory of Chas F FGrainger Grainger at Over 100 to 1 Lonisville Ky October 20 The Golden Rod Sell ing Stakes for twoyearolds which served as the feature of racing at Churchill Downs this afternoon was won by W T Andersons Helen Barbee making her initial start of the meeting The filly showed exceptionally high speed during the early stages but with it also a tendency to quit after going five furlongs and it nearly brought about her defeat for Helene which landed second place was pressing her closely at the finish and would have reversed the outcome In a few more strides The Hague was a close third The race had Its disappointing fea tures in the failure of Danger Mark Princess Calla way and County Tax to be serious factors In the running The trio were supported liberally bv the rank and file of race patrons Todays patronsTodays racing was replete with surprises all the supposed good things being bowled over with clock like regularity Chas F Graingers winning per ¬ formance in the closing dash was a stunner in view of his recent poor form His few backers were jubilant as he rewarded their confidence with more than 100 to 1 for each dollar invested This is the longest price obtained against any winner at this meeting meetingUpsets Upsets came with the opener when Ceremonius a recent arrival from Canada romped away with the purse to l e followed in the next by Husky Lad from James E Gaffneys stable Incidentally It marked the first purse that this wealthy eastern turf patron has pulled down in this part of the country countryT T M Greens performance in the handicap for sprinters was In line with former efforts when he outstayed Royal Captive in a gruelling drive Royal Captive might have won but for Guy Barns over ¬ confident handling of the filly F J Pons again suffered disappointment and the loss of a large amount by the failure of Abrasion The filly was much the best but Grands lack of alertness at the barrier accounted for her poor start and subsequent defeat by Imprudent a wellbacked Respess candidate candidateCool Cool and threatening weather did not deter the usual big crowd from being in attendance The patronage of the sport in this locality this fall has
