FOXHALLS GRANDSON A DERBY WINNER The Australian Jockey Club Derby was run at Sydney New South Wales October 1 It resulted In a decided upset In falling to the 20 to 1 outsider Tauanii a grandson of the famoiis Americanbred horse Koxliall London Sporting Life gives the fol ¬ lowing particulars particularsThe The A J C Derby of 125OO with 2500 to the second and 1250 to the third and 1250 to the nominator of the winner for threeyearolds special weights one mile arid a half halfTaniiiii Taniiiii lir c by Dalmeny Lateni 124 1 1Bobadca Bobadca b c br Uoliadil Ardea 124 2 2Beverage Beverage br c by Maltster Wild Rose 124 Betting Three to 1 against Beverage li to 1 against Jtobadca and IK to 1 against Tanaini Won by two lengths Fourteen ran Time 23 Last season Beverage retired into winter qnar ters with the rejuitation of being one of the best colts bred in the commonwealth Readers of the Sporting Life Vill rcjuenilter that a few months ago reference was made to the magnificent form which he showed at the V R C autumn meeting where in the Sires Produce and Ascot Vale Stakes he met and readily defeated giving from seven rt ten pounds both the animals which finished in front of him for the A J C Derby a result which the public evidently did not anticipate As a twi y ear old Tanaini always competed in highclass company but generally found something to beat him though on several occasions he was excused on the ground that he was a bad starter His breeding however scarcely inspired the belief that he was a Derby horse In embryo for he descends from a mare which although inscribed in the Stud Book cannot he traced for much more than a half century Iih H rted Dalmeny his sire is by Foxhall out of Bag ¬ dad by Ciimeliard and the presence of the name of Foxhall In a pedigree has generally l cei considered an almost insuperable Itarrier to success At any rate as Dalmeny managed to sire the winners of 15345 in IJlOUlO this opinion now requires some modification modificationBobadca Bobadca which ran second was frequently up ¬ sides with Tanaini as a juvenile and each defeated the other In turn He however only managed to capture one race in ten essays but ran second in the Champagne Stakes receiving ten pounds from Beverage which was a closeup fourth Curiously enough in the Melbourne Cup both colts have been awarded the same impost 109 pounds but Tanaini will now have to put up ten pounds extra They were handicapped to receive eight pounds from Beverage and should the latter capture the V R C Derby his weight will then be 117 pounds and as no threeyearold has ever won the Melliourne Cup carrying 112 pounds and upwards readers will gather a tolerably good idea of what manner of reputation Beverage enjoys In the land of his birth His dam is Wild Rose by Melos son of Golds brough from La Vivandicrc by Marvellous Boba ¬ dea is by Bobadil also a son of Bill of Portland out of Ardea by Wallace son of Carbine It re ¬ mains to be seen whether Beverage will reassert his superiority iii the Victorian Derby which is due to l e run three days before the Melbourne Cup
