ENGLISH TWOYEAROLDS OF 1910 Diversity of Opinion as to Which Is Entitled to Be Regarded as TopNotcher Nearly all of the English highclass twoyear1 colts and fillies have gone into winter quarters a ad d the question as to which is the topnotcher renials undecided and there is as much discussion as luf year when Lemberg and Neil Gow divided opinion says a writer in the New York Sun For more than a month there has been a close run for supreniiuV Itetween Sea forth a bay colt by Symington dam l Timothy and owned by Dennot AlcCalnmnt a Pietri a bay colt by St Fnisquln out of lie Powd and owned by Leopold de Rothschild Each hail I admirers all along but the tnrlitcs who are never actuated by sentiment or an animals looks wait41 for the Middle Park Plate at the Second Octol1 meeting to see which was entitled to the nursery crown In this the shrewd brigade were disiip polnted for the pair ran a dead heat for second place the winner being Borrow a gelding owned bv llarr Payne Whitney The American youngster won by a neck but a pull of six pounds in the weights on the other two probably gave him the victory On ac ¬ count of being miscxed Borrow holds no classic en ¬ gagements next year and is out of the reckoning but he has good engagements in the Whitsuntide Plate at Hurst Park and the St George Stakes at1 Liver ¬ pool poolPrior Prior to the Middle Park Plate Seaforth had an unbeaten record with such a highclass list of vic ¬ tories to his credit as the Woodcote Stakes at Epsom the New Stakes at Ascot aud the Michaelmas Plate at Manchester In the first of these three1 occasions he had Borrow among his opponents and the Ameri ¬ can gelding finished in the ruck many lengths in the rear of the winner Seaforth is in the Two Thonsami Guineas and St Leger but not iii tho Derby Pietri began his turf career a couple of weelcs later than Seaforth missed the rich Imperial Produce Stakes and after running green in the Coventry Stakes captured the Princess Plate at Newninrkirt the Richmond Stakes at Goodwood the envied trophy the GImcrack Stakes at Vork and the time honored Champagne Stakes at Doncaster He is in all the big classics of next year but this son of St Frnsquin has a slight mark against him for already lie has shown an inclination to exhibit some tan ¬ trums before the barrier barrierIn In the Gimcrack Stakes Danny Maher had the leg up on Pietri and the colt gave a lot of ti at the gate and when the horses broke awav hi not very much inclined to strike a straight course but Maher finally got hold of him and made him travel In rare style Pietri was still more unman ¬ ageable In the Middle Park Plate and lit was back ¬ ing arid twisting but singularly Maher got him away 111 front The scene before the barrier had the effect of altering the prices for in the paddock Pietri was favorite over Seaforth but when the backers saw his capers on the starting line they switched and Seaforth was the final choice at 5 to 4 while the price against Pietri was 11 to8 to8After After the five runners returned to the paddock the animal to attract the atteiiion of the critics uml those keen on form was King William the colt that came in a close fourth aud only about threequar ¬ ters of a length behind the dead heaters What WHS particularly noticed more than anything else Was that King William was going the fastest and the con ¬ sensus was that had the winning post l een a hundred yards farther away he would have finished in front and had the distance been a mile it was tnonght lie Would have lost the other three completely There was still another iM int in his favor For the biggest part of the journey he was pocketed Inihind the three leaders which were running almost abreast and iii the last furlong Woottou who rode him had to whip him around on the outside a move which lost some groundWhfii ground Whfii King William struck a straight1 Irnp for1 the wire he gained on the others at every stride and for an animal without any serious tralniiig heretofore his display means that he Is an out atul out stayer He was shouldering 122 pounds a pound less than Borrow while Seaforth and Pietri each carried 129 King William is by William III which run second for the Derby in 1SHJ1 and out of a man named Glusalt so that he is highly bred and Is a powerful chestnut with a fine shoulder and of the grand upstanding sort It Is said that he tills the eye as the finished build of a colt for the Eptoni course and after George Lauibtou has put in a ftw months on him in the way of development he Is sure bar accident to shovy some class next seasoli The colt holds a long string of engagements along with the Two Thousand Guineas Derby and St Leger LegerHe He Is owned by Lord Derby and no more fitting episode would be than If he carried the black jacket and white cap of his owner to victory in the raw in ¬ stituted by the Derby family as far back as 1780 and the foremost turf event of the whole world It is singular that in the long stretch of years from the first contest to the present day the race has only been won once by the house of Derby and that was by Sir Peter Teazle for Lord Derby in 17S7 The Oaks was also Inaugurated by the family of Derby In 1781 1781The The National Breeders Produce Stakes at San down Park is the richest twoyearold event of tin season and it was run on July 1 nit her early for a twoyearold race but this did not prevent the big field of eighteen going to the post It was worth 21OOO and was won by Cellini a highlybred chest ¬ nut colt by Cyllene out of the famous Sirenia the dam of Siberia Electra and Moyglare Cyllene is so far ahead In the list of winning sires this year that he will surely top the others and the blood lias done great tilings in the last few years Simula was herself winner of the Duke of York Stakes in 1808 and two years later she won the Jubilee Handi ¬ cap As a performer she ranked very high and it Is worthy of note that she has bred Siberia to St Simon Electra to Eager Moyglare to Flying Fox and now Cellini to Cyllene Previous to this race Cellini had been out twice but failed to secure a bracket In the Knaveshire Plate at York Braxtcd and San Nicolas ran a dead heat and Cellini ran third He began very slowly but when he got fairly moving he did well and gained ground In the Coventry Stakes won by Pietri Cellini got his second airing and he was much improved and was only about half a length off the winner winnerThere There is a very promising colt named Wrinkhr by William the Third out of Stolen Love He Is owned by the Duke of Portland and is such a higli class youngster that he is rated to be only a i Mind below Seafortli and Pietri One of his bes races was in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Gwidwood where carrying 120 pounds he won in a style that left no mistake about his speed and ability to stay for the race was six furlongs Behind him were such good youngsters as Lycaon owned by J l Joel and St Anton owned by Leopold de Roths ¬ child the latter colt for a time in the early season being supposed to be as good as Pietri PietriIn In point of merit next to Wrinkler comes St Nat a brown colt by St Denis out of Nathalie ad the property of Sol Joel This colt has not bein tried of late against any of the topnotehers on count of having no engagements in the big nurseries but nevertheless he is a fine animal aud whenever he happened to carry silk acquitted himself in fashion that led the critics to think that he will l n the front rank next season In the Levant Stakes at Goodwood In July he earned a bracket and carry ¬ ing the nice balance of 128 pounds left behind him such classic beginners as Sunstar Night Knur jui Foot Guard St Anton is another St Frnsiiln v out of Grig and he has figured well in the earlip events for the youngsters The same can bo sa of Beaurepaire bv Fariinan out of Pilitesse th property of W Raphael At Goodwood fur tin Mo comb Stakes he beat Borrow though the latter hli the worst of the weights by four pounds It MiUs Romeo a classic nomination for next season was j this race but lie found that Vll pounds was a littli too much for him in such company companyA A colt that has come into iiromincnoe at tile re cent Kcinpttm Park metling is Prince Palatine v Persimmon out of Lady LIslitfoot He won the In perial Produce Stakes of l li i MH carry 122 poiini and from u highclass field composed of Braxted Melcager St nlon Phryxus and Sandal Tin colt was bred l y Colonel HallWalker but is now own by Mr Iilkington and he is in the Guineas Ucn and St Leger LegerSo So far tho best of the American nominations l the classics is the filly Sandwich by Rock Sanl Teas Over and owned by August Iclinont si is in the Oaks and One Thousand Guineas but ir not hold an engagement in the Derby Two Thoiisa Guineas or St Uger At th Newmarket I l meeting recently she caMured the Criterion st7i one of the biggest of the autumn events for yearolds and she beat such a good one as Uori though the Rock Sand filly had the best of lv weights The last week in September at N market Sandwich secured another bracket the race Itftals be First Nursery Handicap and on that occa ¬ sion shu bad
