GOOD FORTUNE OF WHITNEY STABLE IN ENGLAND Guidon Eng October 22 The Newmarket Second October meeting proved onu of exceedingly good for ¬ tune for II P Whitney signa1 achievements by Borrow Whisk Broom and the Adam Sallic of Navarre filly bringing the straightforward American stable its greatest measure of success since it began racing in England Borrow was the main instrument in this through winning the Clearwell Stakes and the much more valuable Middle Park Plate The net result when the meeting was over was that Mr Whitney had been advanced to the eminence of third in Englands list of winning owners of 1910 only Mr Fairie and Lord Derby surpassing him in stable winnings Borrow also became the leading twoyearold winner of the year leading Cellini by nlKMit 5000 Unluckily his engagements for next year are meager being limited to the Payne Stakes at Newmarket Whitsuntide Plate at Hurst Park and St George Stakes at Liverpool He was not nomi ¬ nated to the Two Thousand Derby or St Leger and lKing a gelding could not be started if he had been beenWhen When he won the Clearwell Stakes on the first day of the meeting Borrow was the favorite at 13 to 8 He carried 128 pounds and only won by a head from Lord Falmouths good filly Invlcta which had up 122 K unds But when it came to the Middle Park Plate the wise heads scarcely gave Borrow a thought By all it was deemed a duel between D McCalmonts unlteaton Seaforth and Leopold dc Rothschilds Pietrl this general opinion being re ¬ flected in the betting which at post time was to 4 against Seaforth 11 to S Pietri 100 to 12 King William 100 to Borrow and 20 to 1 Simdal It was the presence of the two cracks that scared others out and reduced the field to five When it came to the running Sandal on the stand side dwelt slightly and Pietrl dashed off in front of Seaforth the pair being slightly in advance of Bor ¬ row with King William at their heels Pietrl held an advantage of aliont a length for a quarter of a niile when Seaforth deprived him of the lead the pair racing neck and neck in front of Borrow Down Bushes Hill Borrow drew level with the two favor ¬ ites and in the Dip lie headed Seaforth and main ¬ taining the advantage to the end won a good race by a neck while Pietrl reached Seaforth iu the last few strides and deadheated with him for second place King William was a closeup fourth and Sandal tailed off all the way last Time 118J Borrow carried 123 pounds while the deadheaters each had up 12J The horses finished closely bunched and Scaforths rider Randall claimed a foul on the ground of boring ia and bumping by thp winner but it was overruled by the stewards The backers of the two beaten favorites were In ¬ tensely chagrined over the unexpected outcoiuu and there Is now a disposition to re turn to the former opinion which gave St Nat the honor of being the best twoyearold of 1010 At the same time those who held that Borrow could not stay six furlongs in good company now perceive the error of their ways waysLemberg Lemberg will not lie raced any more this year and has gone into retirement until next years racing arrives arrivesBayardos Bayardos subscription is full at 1523 for next season and he is filling fast for 1012 lie stands at file Manton Stud StudFrench French breeders arc showing a strong desire to avail themselves of tlic services of Sundridge and all subscriptions to this stallion have been taken to the end of the year 1 14 M CIieriHalbronn has certainly shown wisdom and foresight In securing this horse from J B Joell A speedy horse was wanted at the stud in France During recent years everything has been sacrificed for the sake of stam ¬ ina and the power of endurance under heavy weighty The introduction of Snndridge notwithstanding his reputation of being a mere sprinter will do much to rectify faults that have been creeping into the system of the French stud farms The young Sun dridgcs bred in England have all earned the reputa ¬ tion of being flyers and the alliance of their sire with the sturdy mares of France should have most satisfactory results resultsFrank Frank and Stanley Wootton are to be seen riding over hurdles on Kpom Downs almost every morning and their sister Stella on a tiny black pony not standing fourteen hands follows them She is probably the finest little horsewoman of her age in the country and no jockey could shape better betterFrom From ninth place to third in the list of winning owners has been the progress made iu one week by H P Whitney due mainly to the prowess of his unsexcd son of Hamburg and Forget Borrow More ¬ over it is quite probable that he will retain his proud position lie having at least as much chance of adding to his stable winnings as his closest com ¬ petitor Lord
