WAR DEPARTMENT WAKES UP Lexington Ky Xoveniber 15 The United States War Department lias at last come to a realization of what lias long been recognized by all European governments namely that the thoroughbred horse is by far the best animal for cavalry service As a result of this conclusion Capt Jasper H Conrad has been ordered to attend the fall sales of thoroughbreds to be held here soon for the purpose of securing as innny young horses as he can get for reasonable prices to be used for the United States cavalry and especially for the mounted service schools Cavalry officers generally have long shown a preference for the thoroughbred for their personal use but the government has been content with supplying the cavalry with best horses of any breed which was con ¬ venient going on the principle that horses were cheap and could be easily replaced when worn out outXow Xow that horses have become much higher than they have been for many years an effort is to be made to secure animals which will last longer and be more serviceable than the ordinary coldblooded horse All of the European governments have long recognized the advantage of thoroughbred blood in the cavalry horse and most of them have to a cer ¬ tain extent subsidized the turf in order to improve the breed of horses
