DEATH OF A PRINCELY TURFMAN We much regret to announce the death of Prince Hatzfeldt which took place at a London hotel on Thursday night November 3 Together with Prin ¬ cess Hatzfeldt he had just returned from abroad and while at the hotel was suddenly attacked by Illness which turned out to be acute pneumonia and despite the services of specialists and his own physician the prince passed away as stated above A solemn requiem will be held at the Church of the Immaculate Conception Farm street Berkeley square W on Monday next at 1030 a m and the funeral will take place at Crottorf Germany on the following Wednesday WednesdayThe The deceased Prince Franz Hatzfeldt was born on June 15 1853 at Marxheim HesseNassau and was the only son of Alfred Prince von Hatzfeldt Woldenburg and Gabrielle Countess of Dictrichstein ProskauLesHe He married in 1889 Miss Clara Huntingdon of Detroit Mich 1T S A and from 1S9G they resided at Draycot House Chippenham Wilts WiltsPrince Prince Hatzfeldt was a wellknown figure in society and in the world of sport and he and the princess entertained largely at their town house in Berkeley square It was not until seven years ago that the prince first became an owner of race horses first registering his color yellow under National Hunt Rules in 1903 but his jacket was not long in becoming famous for already in 1906 it was carried to victory in the chief steeplechase of the world the Grand National by means of Ascetics Silver which in the hands of his trainer the Hon Aubrey Hastings brought off a 20 to 1 chance winning in easy fashion by ten lengths from Red Lad Aunt May and a score at others Prince Hatzfeldt be it here said also owned Hat racers during the last three years of his life His colors under Jockey Club rules were yellow with a black and yellow quartered cap but lie owned nothing that did much on the Hat HatAmong Among his earlier jumpers was Dearslayer which lie bought from JV G Bulteel and which won a minor steeplechase or two for him and ran in Moi faas and Kirklands Nationals Ascetics Silver fell in Kirklands race He was at that time the property of P J Dunne Soon afterwards the un sexcd son of Ascetic out of Silver Lady was pur ¬ chased by Prince Hatzfeldt and he ran twice that backend without success In 1896 two more failures preceded his memorable victory in the Grand Na ¬ tional but at Sandown Park in February he broke a blood vessel and was pulled up Doubtless to this mishap was due liis being allowed to start at 10 to 1 at his next appearance early in March when he easily defeated Shoot Wolfs Folly etc for a threemile steeplechase at Hurst Park How he then slammed the opposition in the Grand Na ¬ tional is outlined above On that occasion he carried lOst 9 Ibs but when he again faced the starter at Aintree a twelvemonth later his weight was the substantial one of 12 st 7 Ibs Despite the fact that only such giants among chasers as Cloister and Manifesto had managed to get home under that hunting burden Ascetics Silvers friends would not be denied and he shared favoritism with Red Lad He was badly interfered with however in the first round and although he completed the course he finished a very long way in rear of the winner 5Ir Stanley Howards Eremon Prince Hatzfeldts sec ¬ ond string the riderless Rathvale did his best to bring Eremon to grief Newey having to whip him awayat every fence but he sailed home a very easy winner from Tom West the pair finishing a long way in front of the third horse Patlander PatlanderIn In 190S Prince Hatzfeldt was not represented in the Grand National which fell to the 6R to 1 chance the Americanbred Rubio but in 1909 Ascetics Sil ¬ ver 12 st 7 Ibs and Rathvale 11 st 7 Ibs again did duty without however gaining distinc ¬ tion This year the yellow jacket was carried by Rathvale and Carsey the latter a purchase from J M Kerne Rathvale catnadown early in the race hut Carney ran right well finishing fourth to Jenk Instown Jerry M and Odor Among other jumpers of note owned by the deceased prince can be men ¬ tioned Clyduff Playful Ocean Tipperary Mask Cos ¬ sack Post Conari Ashcot and Arable Only about a fortnight ago his jacket was conspicuous at Chel ¬ tenham Black Jap winning twice and Dissenter and Regent once each while Uncle Michael won over hurdles at Sandown Park ParkBv Bv the death of Prince Hatzfeldt the nominations of Carsey and Rathvale in the Grand Sef ton Steeple ¬ chase and of Regent In the Becher Steeplechase at next weeks meeting at Liverpool become void Other void nominations are those at todays meeting at Hooton Park of Carsey and Regent in the Stewards Handicap Steeplechase Uncle Michael in the Cheshire Hurdle Handicap and Regent in the Open Steeplechase London Sportsman of November o
