MR WHITNEYS STABLE IN ENGLAND Important Reinforcements Sent Over to Join Jack Joyners Victorious Forces From time to time it has been reported that II P Whitney whose colors have become so popular on this side of the Atlantic and who like his father before him is one of the most liberal patrons of the English turf had It in mind to retire Per ¬ sonally I have paid little heed to these rumors for no other reason than that with the publication of each successive Racing Calendar his name has been one of the most prominent among nominators for the important races of the future and gratifying It is now to be in the position to refute these canards says Vigilant in London Sportsman of November 4 As a matter of fact Mr Whitney doubtless vexed by the state of affairs at present obtaining in America in connection with the sport of kings is keener than ever to race over here and as a result of his recent visit to America for the purpose of sifting the wheat from the chaff as regards the year ¬ lings bred at his famous stud at Brookdalc I can now announce definitely that tomorrow will be shipped twentytwo youngsters on board the Minne ¬ apolis from Now York of highclass breeding as also three twoyearolds namely Bashti Matinee and a ally by Riley out of Queen of Hearts of which the Qrst named enjoys tho reputation of having been quite a firstclass performer In the United States The yearlings which needless to state have all been put through the mill with more or less satis aetory result comprise a bay jeolt by Hamburg out of Eugenia Burch a bay colt by Hamburg out of Morniugsidc a chestnut colt by Hamburg out of Iota a bay colt by Hamburg out of Vespers a brown colt by Hamburg out of Jinks a brown colt y Hamburg out of Flip Flap a chestnut colt by Hamburg out of Miss Hamburg a chestnut colt by Burgomaster out of Fiesolc a bay or brown colt by Iurgomaster out of Ballyhoo a bay or brown colt by Burgomaster out of Melba a bay or brown colt by Burgomaster out of Sandria a chestnut colt by Iturgomaster out of Urania a chestnut colt by Ham liurg or Burgomaster out of Monadour a chestnut illy by Hamburg out of Perverse a chestnut filly y Hamburg out ofBonnie Star a bay tllly by Ham ¬ burg out of Elusive a black filly by Hamburg out of Black Venus a chestnut filly by Adam out of ilandspun a chestnut filly by Adam out of Repute i bay filly by Adam out of Wild Thyme and a chestnut BejleFrom filly by Burgomaster out of Yorkvllle Bejle From the particulars above detailed It will be withered that Mr Whitney purposes introducing fresh blood into this country for on reference to his Morses In training last spring I find new dams in ugenia Bnrch Vespers Klip Flap Miss Ham ¬ burg Sandria Monadour Perverse Bonnie Star Klushv Black Venus Repute and Wild Thyme most of which trace back to home breeding on high class lines It will be noted that among this lot is included no relative of Sir Whitneys crack two vearold Borrow which Is unfortunately a gelding and could in no circumstances consequently have jeen qualified for any of the classic threeyearold aces which must be regrettable in the instance of i Middle Park Plate winner The unsexingof horses hould possibly be more frequently practiced than is customary In this country but on the other hand may be carried to excess by the Americans and in support of my contention I would cite the case of Borrow which ia one of the handsomest horses In trainig beautifully bred and so fas as I know without a fault in character In the circumstances It seems regrettable that like Dean Swift and other good horses similarly conditioned Borrow has no future beyond his racing career but I notice that none of the Brookdale yearlings which are due to ar ¬ rive at Newmarket in the course of the next few days has so far been deprived of his chance at the stud Of all his bloodstock possessions Hamburg is probably Mr Whitneys prime favorite and much enhanced was his delight at winning the Middle Park Plate with Borrow for the reason that he was sired by the famons son of Hanover and Lady Reel which himself headed the list of winning stallions in America four years in succession It will not escape notice that there are several young Adams in the above team and he of course is the Frenchbred horse by Flying Fox which was bred and owned by M Edmond Blanc and was sold for service In America but has I fancy returned to his native land landJoyner Joyner who trains privately for H P Whitney has made himself persona grata since he took up bis residence at Baliaton Lodge at Newmarket and no war cry is more gratifying among his contemporaries than his farreaching wowwow which announces the victory of one of his horses on a race course With all who have come In contact with the genial American trainer he is as popular as were his pre ¬ decessors Jacob Pincus and John Huggins and it is pleasant to add that he has been equally as success ¬ ful in his vocation as either of these masters of the nrt of training during the two seasons he has prac ¬ ticed in this country Last year he turned out the winners of thirtythree races and up to date he has won thirtyfive this Inclusive of three Englishbred ones namely the still unnamed colt by Persimmon out of Dame dOr Sand Glass by Black Sand out of Valve and Geography by Atlas out of Madame Worth he commenced the year with thirtythree horses which have been reinforced by the purchase of First Flight which was bought for 3500 after she won the Waterloo Selling Nursery at Kemp ton Park more on account of the value of her blood for stud purposes than her intrinsic racing merit though she has repaid the outlay by winning since She is a very nice filly by Thrush out of Earls Seat and in due course will be sent out to tho Brookdale Stud in the United States The Dame dOr colt which was bred by Russell Swanwlck and cost Mr Whitney 13000 as a yearling is a smart twoyearold that made a winning hit In the Tathwcll Sale Stakes at Doncastcr and Sand Glass by Black Sand which came from Lord Rose berys stud justified his purchase as a yearling for 3030 when he brought off a gambling coup in a selling race at York when he was exploited by Mr Whitney for the benefit of his friends and guests rather than for himself for I think I am right In saying that he bets In but small sums Since then he has been drafted out of the stable in company with various others in order to make room for the coming yearlings yearlingsThe The principal winner from the Baliaton House establishment Is Borrow whose successes include the Crabbet Plate at Gatwick the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot the Great Kingston T Y O Plate at Sandown Park the Harrington Plate at Derby a dead heat with Sunstar at the Newmarket First October meeting for the Hopeful Stakes the Clear well Stakes and most Important of nil the Middle Park Plate Without being qnite at the top of the tree he ranks high in the juvenile class but Is a gelding and consequently ineligible for the classic events of next year Most conspicuous of his stable companions is Whisk Broom by Broomstick out of Audience a threeyearold which only just escaped being a classic as witness his good race for the Two Thousand Guineas while he more than earned his keep by winning the Trial Stakes at Ascot and still more recently the Select Stakes at headquarters A useful winner in the team is New Castle by Meddler out of Homespun which annexed the All Aged Stakes at Ascot the Beaufort Stakes at tin Second Snunner meeting hehiml the Ditch the Fast Anglian Plate nt Yarmouth and the Coventry Plate at Kempton Park and in the same category may be Included the filly by Hamburg out of Lady Frivoles which won the Fitzwilliam Stakes at the I Continued ou second page MR WHITNEYS STABLE IN ENGLAND Continned from first page Craven and the Wilbrabam Plate at the First Spring uniting nt Newmarket and the Mersey Stakes n Liverpool in the summer Once only has she been beaten namely when St Nat was half a length too good for her in the Fiftythird Biennial Stakes at Ascot when however Prince Palatine and other good twoyearolds were among her followers but tor some reason unknown to me she has not run since Liverpool Among Joyners other winners were Bibbin by Meddler out of Handspun Hillside by Hamburg out of Morningside Perseus by Persimmon out of Urania Pequot by Hamburg out of Regatta II Top o the Morning by Hamburg out of Morningside Artless by Hamburg out of Martha II Oversight by Ballyhoo Bey out of For ¬ get Kiel by Hamburg out of Regatta II the lilly by Hamburg out of Blue Girl the filly by Adam out of Sal lie of Navarre Hamilton by Sandringham or Hamburg out of Fiesole the filly by Adam out of Belle of Troy and the gelding by Hamburg out of Jinks but disappointment has been the portion of Delirium while the gelding by Hamburg o of Mineola of which much was expected but iwhieh is afflicted with a vile temper has yet to make his first appearance in public Mr Whitney is a breeder on an extensive scale there being upwards ot forty broodmares at his stud in New Jersey and five stal ¬ lions naniely Hamburg Broomstick Ballyhoo Bey Burgomaster and Sandringham of which the last named was bred by his late Majesty King Edward
